Steel-and-glass sections joined, but more work remains

ATHENS, Greece - The second half of a steel-and-glass roof for the main Olympic stadium was pulled into place Friday to cover the 75,000-seat facility that will serve as a showcase for the Aug. 13-29 games.

Costas Mathiopoulos, a representative of the Aktor construction company, said workers “are finished” sliding the roof into place.

The roof was assembled in two parts next to the stadium, with each piece slowly pulled into place over tracks leading to the facility. Its two arches hold synthetic glass panels, most of which have already been installed.

The massive east arch of the roof, designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, was moved more than 197 feet on a type of giant roller skate.

About bloody time. Any word on whether the place is going to have any seats?

The place has seats. It had seats before this. The roof thing is such a farce. It's an open air stadium. The roof covers the seats only. This is in a country with little rain. The seats will be under direct light for part of the day. It's a small relief for the fans and nothing more. A lot of hype/bullshit for nothing. :artist:

This weekend the Greek track & field championships are taking place at the Olympic Stadium. They are designated as test event for the stadium. Should be interesting to see how that goes.

The reason I asked about the seats is because there was an article recently about how ATHOC cancelled the contract they had with the Australian company that was going to supply all of the seats for the stadium. I haven't heard if anything has changed.
