Greece Name EuroBasket Preliminary Squad

Dimitris Diamantidis, Theo Papaloukas and the other 10 members of Greece's silver-medal winning squad at the 2007 FIBA World Championship have been named in coach Panagiotis Yannakis' 18-strong preliminary group for EuroBasket 2007.

The Greeks will be defending their title win at EuroBasket 2005 in Belgrade and will compete in Granada, Spain, in Group A, along with Russia, Serbia and the team that wins the additional qualifying tournament.

Sofoklis Schortsianitis, one of the big surprises last year in Japan, had a largely disappointing season at Olympiacos but Yannakis has given him a chance to fight for one of the 12 places on offer.

Ioannis Bourousis was in the gold-medal winning team of two years ago but did not go to Japan.

He is included in the preliminary squad, as well as Panathinaikos' exciting new addition from Panionios, Stratos Perperoglou.

Reyes: Greece And Lithuania Will Shine

Spain star Felipe Reyes has singled out holders Greece and Lithuania as two of the sides he expects to shine at this summer's EuroBasket 2007.

Hosts Spain are among the favourites to add a EuroBasket title to their World Championship crown, but Reyes insists there are plenty of other countries who can give his team a run for their money.

Of those rival nations, Reyes expects Greece - who finished runners-up to Spain in last year's FIBA World Championship - to be right up there, along with Lithuania, who beat Spain in the EuroBasket 2003 final.

Reyes, who started the World Championship final in the place of injured superstar Pau Gasol, said: "National teams come out in full force for the EuroBasket. You can't relax against any team.

"There are always surprises. But if I had to pick our biggest rivals, I would say reigning European Champion and World Championship runners-up Greece, or Lithuania."

The list of title hopefuls does not end there for Reyes, though, with the Real Madrid ace expecting challenges to come from all corners when the tournament tips off in September.

"Then there's Italy, France, and many more," he added on

"There's probably even more talent in a European Championship than a World Championship, where you get teams from Asia and Africa that tend to be a little easier."

Spain have never won the European Championships but have claimed two silver medals and one bronze in the last four editions.

The host nation have been drawn in Group B in this year's tournament, alongside Croatia, Latvia and Portugal, and Reyes is hoping they can keep the feel-good factor of basketball going in the country.

"You can tell we won the World Championship. People recognise me more and people are giving more importance to the sport," Reyes said when asked about the current popularity of basketball in Spain.

"But, it's basically stayed the same as ever. Football is king in Spain and dethroning it is impossible. Other sports are worse off, though. We're the fortunate ones in

This might piss some of you off but with Okur and Turkoglou playing I think the Turks are a good bargain at 18-1
