    You are sadly mistaken Val...

We looked so "good" during the playoffs b/c our opponents were DEAD, tired and injured...

PAOK had more injuries than available players...

Astera had been playing since June... they were were playing for 1 yr non stop and had Euro duties

Atromito was managed by a bufoon but managed to get into playoffs due to technicality and spent all their energy to enter "playoff race"

Not only that.. but we "rested" and coasted for 5-6 games after tha gavro game....  most of our 1st team players were left out and a lot of other players were given opportunties.. plus we looked rather lifeless out there b/c we were sooo far ahead

Therefore, when playoffs started our team seemed "rested" and we had better 'fitness" than them

    I highly doubt it,

Which playoffs are you referring to? This year or the previous? I'm talking about the summer we got beat by standard. Later on in the second half of the season, we were the fittest side, were we not?

These playoffs that just occurred, i couldn't agree more. In fact when people started praising koutroubis and ninis, i was the first one to comment on how dead the opposition were.

  2. my guess is Anastasiou has burnt everyone out already given lack of rest due to the playoffs...

We played playoffs last time around as well, before eventually running everyone off the park in the second half of last season. Only a change in fitness personal can bring about a change of this magnitude. I hope not for our sake because it's our best attribute, compensating for our lack of quality in certain areas. It is what separated us from the rest last season as we provided good value, vying for the league.

  3. So aek picked up buonanotte.

Haven't watched him play since his malaga days but that was only 2-3 years ago. I would imagine he still has his pace and off-course has that amazing technical ability on the ball. It hasn't always worked out for him at previous clubs, and one can only question if he is still carrying demons from that unfortunate 2009 incident. If all is well with him, ''

  4. Tavlaridis has improved with age. He was solid with gordon at the back. It's a shame gordon has left because they had amazing chemistry. This is the first thing anastasiou needs to address.

  5. If you were to go back and watch videos of the playoffs, you will have a hard time convincing yourself that this is the same team.

I've somewhat noticed a pattern. Unless we score early, the team loses confident. We let in second halve goals and then and there, the players give up. This is extremely F***ed up. We need to shake this before the season starts.

  6. What the hell happened to Marinakis and Donis? Both of them looked very promising but they are turning out like Trianta. It hearts me to say this but a lot of players from our youth team aren't good enough. Lagos might be the only exception.

I'm afraid you are right. Donis has no place on this team, it didn't help also that he is contemplating his future. Marinakis showed some promise, got us all asking why he was loaned out. I guess now it's obvious why.

    Lagos at least offers something.

I hope aggelopoulos, the kid that came on for zeca doesn't follow the same path as donis. Looks a better player though.

  7. It seems this team will always give up cheap goals. There is something seriously messed up here to a point were we go through periods were we lose our heads completely.

What is more worrying is that we fail to create chances. Anastasiou tried a 4-4-2 rombo for the first 25 min before altering to a 4-5-1 and finishing with a 4-2-3-1 to no avail. The lack of natural wingers doesn't help either.

At least we got to see nano and steel back. Steel is not 100%, but the difference in quality is obvious. Nano was the only one wiping in crosses.

  8. Obviously the priority is for him to be solid defensively and I?ll reserve my judgement for the time being. I was merely making a point about his ball retention capabilities, which is probably what drew us to him.

Most serious sides have at least one centre halve with a good first touch and pass. It means you can knock the ball around at the back and are more likely to keep it upon pressing. Compare that to playing limited defenders who can only clear the ball upon pressing, possibly resulting in a loss of possession.

  9. Tavlaridi has alitia (in a good way) written all over him. Very Kyriako/Kalitzakish... He's a non nonsense kind a guy that will fight tooth and nail.. I agree, too bad he came at 34...

That's a very good description of him.

Sanchez will complement him well, we should keep the ball a lot more with the spaniard in the side, kind of like hummels at dortmund.

  10. i don't like the idea of pranjic going back to midfield too lazy won't run enough!!...he played amazing at lb.. let it be!..don't fix what isn't broken :)

Actually pranjic (33 years old mind you) has been our hardest runner so far. I'm not sure if the change in position has prompted this but he is up there with zeca.

Looking back, three out of the four brugge goals did come from his side but what do you expect him to do, not get forward? Especially in a system that lacks wingers.... A good side should provide cover. For instance, when your fullback gets forward, one of your CM should rotate over to the touch line to cover. Perhaps asking your DM to push back into the defense line? You can also instruct your fullbacks to take turns getting forward, therefore we always have three at the back.

Regardless of how you decide to provide cover, al this is to be rehearsed on the training ground. It doesn't help also when 3/4 players in your backline are either new additions or haven't played there before. I don't think enough emphasis was put on 'how the lack of cohesion at the back' might cost us against a side like brugge.

For pranjic though i think he has hit the ground running (literally), he was always decent with his performances but i think this season, regardless of where he plays, he is willing to step it up a gear.

  11. ^^Agreed, he will be 35 soon but he could've fooled me, the way he played last season. He has worked under mourinho but even as a youngster, he showed a great understanding of the game. It's amazing how many DM (Busquets,Guardiola), show this quality, possibly because they get to see the game unfold before their eyes. He may not have the legs, but with him on the pitch the basically have another coach to school those around him, just like gilberto did with simao.

  12. I thought the tactics were correct and the way the first half went proves it to be so,kotsolis was hardly tested ,where as their keeper had to make a couple of saves at full stretch.

we looked good in the 1st half.

We did look comfortable, but the game-plan is not for 90 min. We always leak goals and today was no different.

Did we even prepare for the scenario that we might concede? Because quite frankly it didn?t seem that way. Once we found ourselves trailing, that was it, almost as if the players themselves knew that they didn?t have it in themselves to overturn the result. The over reliance on certain individuals is obvious, certain individuals that had an off night.

It?s disappointing because just a week ago, we overturned the result, we changed to a 4-4-2 rombo and the response was positive.

    It's certainly not a decline!

The league this year is stronger, especially with the addition of aek. Creates another big derby and some extra worthy competition.

Panathinaikos have added some great players into the squad, we fell short and were out played by a better team. Yeh it sucks, but realistically speaking none of us expected to be in CL.

You do realise the second goal we copped was a huge deflection and as well a massive kick in the nuts for the team psychologically..

Karelis with a bit more composure could of had a few, I think there was a penalty that could have been given to berg...

Some days these come our way, sometimes they don't. Funny thing is, had all those factors played to our advantage, you wouldn't hear one single complaint in these forums about our team. And every one would have the confidence of a person who just racked 3 lines of coke in his nose that we would be able to beat Man U in the following round.

Disagree. AEK is coming from an inferior division, it will take some time to get back to where they were, assuming they are willing to spend.  It?s the players that make the difference. The likes of leto, mirallas, vieirinha etc.

Regarding our signings, I think the jury is still out on all of them.

We were unlucky, no one is denying that but regarding our attacking play, it was slim pickings up front. I don?t feel that we did ourselves justice.

Actually I was voicing my concerns after beating brugge in the first leg and a few other were doing the same.

  13. When you don't have the financial muscle to compete at a higher level you normally should try to build a team from the defense up and not the other way around.

Don't have the defensive base to be focused and solid enough to go to Brugges and get a result. At some point you just knew the team would concede a stupid goal and it did.

I think our ownership and coaches underestimated the apparent weaknesses on this team and did not address them correctly. Shame really cause Brugges wasn't anything special. Golden opportunity blown here.

    Very well said.

In the past we were built from the back up. It's the first rule of thumb for europe. Second, your midfield tends to determine the quality of your side and again in the past, we were competitive. Generally the only criticism for previous sides, was the lack of proficiency in front of goal but through perseverance, we would usually get the goal. Whilst this current side is arguably more lethal with berg up front, we lack the more important fundaments to succeed at this level.

  14. Why are Greek teams such a let down in Europe!!! Especially away from home!! Brugge are ###### s%$#!!!! And we always lose to s%$#! goals! At least play well and then we can say we tried! It's like we are scared to win!

The quality is dropping year by year. Next time you watch a greek team play focus on their ball retention and count how long before they lose the ball (ethniki also). In the local derbies the ball moves like a pinball because there is no one to keep the ball.

Brugge were nothing special offcourse, but they scored three goals despite creating so little. Greek teams have been never known to do this.

Frustrating to watch!!! Promised so much, delivered so little. Another good chance blown. Never imagined a 3-0 loss. Anastasiou got it completely wrong with tactics and formation.

Tactics wise yes, not enough balance. When you lack complete midfielders, you usually opt for a 4-2-3-1. The only way we were going to progress was by not conceding but that seems impossible for this side. Anastasiou said it himself that we have to score but at the same time didn't give us the best chance of doing so.

    Disappointing is an understatement.

You guys are correct that the team with the exception of Berg, possibly 1 or 2 others is low quality for European standards.

We have been saying a long time that we needed to find a berg for the midfield and defense. Now i'm not sure if sanchez is of that quality, but we definitely didn't find a player of this nature for the midfield. Aja, donis, ninis, zeca, lagos, koutro etc none of these guys offer the quality we require.

For the record, this team plays it's best football in the second half of the season and continues to perform up to the climax of the season. This is more a result of our fitness levels not to mention finding the right mix as anastasiou did with petric last season. Also we are not playing in europe around this time.

  15. Not sure why Kaltzas we not in the 18 but his speed could of help on that right side.

I know its early but the reason we signed some players were for these type of games

    Essein hurt

    Sanchez suspended

    Kaltzas didn't make the 18

Lod played but not showing much so far in the 2 European games

Wemmer so far our best signings SO FAR EPAME!.

    THelander Hurt

One way or another, none of them helped. At least brugge had their new guy vanaken terrorise us in the first 20 min at leoforo.

kotsolis should never have started, and paying big bucks for an injured  star player who was sitting in the stands twiddling his thumbs has backfired on us,if that money was spent on an able body player who could of been out on the field ,we might be singing a dfirent tune now.

    Kotsolis performed well enough.

I agree about the spending on essien. Even if he was on the pitch, whilst i think his presence would've been a boost for his teamates, i don't think he would've corrected the lack of balance in the midfield. This money needed to go to a more attacking player.

  16. Offcourse we were unlucky but brugge are a much better rounded side.

Bad defending on the first goal, we said before the game that we need to be faultless at the back but it seems this side always has the potential to concede. It's become a trait.

Our attack was off, we only really attacked from the flanks because we lack quality in the middle of the park. I expressed my concerns time and time again about the midfield, we need signings.

Overal we haven't improved from last year. Also none of our signings really helped us over the two legs.
