  1. Bulleen 2-2 south Melbourne

We were played off the park for 70 minutes, bulleen jumped out to 2-0 lead in the first 20 minutes, south were terrible and the synthetic pitch was having a huge impact on the game, our players looked like they had stepped onto ice, they literally looked scared playing on that thing and resorted to just pumping long balls to the other end of the field which played into bulleens hands, we came into the game after about the 70th minute, pulled it back to 2-1 in the 84th minute and struck the equaliser in the 89th. Completely underserved draw but we will take it as I doubt many teams will walk out of that place with anything this season.

Atmosphere was top notch, 2,500 people on a 8.30pm Monday night kick off time, the lines outside to get in were chaotic and I missed both of bulleens goals, place went nuts when south equalised though.

  2. lol, no same thing

Not even, samaras is only known cos of his links to Melbourne, I think in America they have a broader knowledge of the game thanks to a heavy Latino influence to go with the euro interest, here in Australia if you haven't played a significant time in the English premier league/Barcelona or Real Madrid you may as well not exist.

The most famous all time Greek players in oz would be Dabizas and kyrgiakos thanks to the stints they had at Newcastle and Liverpool respectively. They wouldn't have a clue down here who manolas or our other euro based players are currently.

  3. Honestly when you look at the names side by side like that and compare where each player plays his club football the gulf is pretty massive. You have big representation in champions league/ europa league with the greek team...in fact if these players played for australia the bogans here would probably label it a golden generation.

  5. I was sitting behind the benches and can definitely recall a few men in suits walking over to the olympiakos bench after the 3-0 went in after 15 minutes, Oly noticeably dropped off from that point on, none of us know what was said but you would think the message went out to them to cool off, if they were allowed to go at it for 90 minutes I have no doubt they would have put 10 past victory.

I'm not gonna lie most gsl games are painful to sit through, entertainment wise the A league probably wins out, the thing is the new dawners actually think that makes the Australian league better, I remember the argument a few years ago that Brisbane roar would beat Stoke city cos they play better football and Stoke just hoof it, these clowns of course failing to realise that technically every Stoke player was on average 5 levels above the quality of an A league player and the difference being that Tony pulis directed his team to play that style, just because a team plays long ball it doesn't mean they have garbage players, but that's the level of idiots we are dealing with here. Aek proved the sheer gulf in technical ability when they came here.

In fact you would notice in this country we always go through phases, first it was the Dutch craze, now Spanish is all the rage, when Ange postecoglou was coaching Brisbane playing a long ball was considered a sin, this year it's all about flares...we go through these little annoying buzz stages. Meanwhile in the real world of football (Europe) teams are scraping for titles, European spots and throwing everything on the line to avoid relegation, whilst here the same bat s%$#! boring teams play eachother every 3 weeks and teams like central coast can lose 100 games in a row and still be in the top flight.

The latest classic on Fornaroli is a laugh, apparently he couldn't score goals in Greece because panathinaikos never had a midfielder of the caliber of Aaron mooy to feed him LOL...the same Aaron mooy that couldn't cut it in Scotland ffs.

Honestly sometimes I wish we could just press the reset button and go back to the 90s and have the NSL, at least we enjoyed it for what it was and never compared our local heroes to global players or our clubs to global giants, here in Melbourne we all loved Paul Trimboli for eg but nobody would ever claim he was world class or anything, he was just a gun for Australian soccer and we loved him for it, I miss those days when everything felt real, nowadays everyone is trapped in fantasy land and listening to it does my head in.

  6. In Melbourne we must have at least 30 Greek clubs, feels like every neighbourhood has a Greek team lol, in the top state division npl you got 6 Greek clubs I think. Most of them don't really have any fans except for south Melbourne and to a lesser extent Heidelberg, the rest are not worth talking about.

  7. South come away with a 2-0 win at port Melbourne, 1st half was the best we had played all season, had enough chances to score a bucketload, to ports credit they had most of the ball in the 2nd half but didn't threaten enough.

    3 from 3, 12 goals scored, 0 conceeded.

Off to bulleen next Monday night/labour day, traditionally a popular game that gets a big crowd and we haven't played at that ground for years, should be a fun night.

  8. I posted this in the other thread about the matches being like training sessions and why the best results the club gets are in the early stages of the champions league as the team is in the process of establishing a big points lead in the league, once that lead is established to the point where it's all but mathematically over ( December) that's when the team also starts becoming useless in Europe. Moving forward this will be a serious issue for the club, when the inevitable occurs next year perhaps for certain league games they would be better off just playing the fringe players who will at least be hungry, a formula needs to be established to keep the entire playing roster on their toes.

  9. The bergers are a decent side and will be in the finals mix south just crushed them last week and everything clicked, the Knights lost a lot of key players but for a proud club like that it's a disgraceful score line . Every team loses but I'd be livid if south ever copped 6 against anyone in this league, bentleigh also out 6 past Richmond so the goals are flying in.

Another derby for Hellas away at port Melbourne on Friday night, this will be tricky as port purposely reduce the grounds size so they can shut opposing teams down, kid you not its a juniors ground these days and we always struggle there as we have no space to move the ball, basically becomes Russian roulette.

  10. The empty stands at kairaskaki to see the team clinch the title speaks volumes and shows where the league sits in the pecking order, the season will be remembered for 2 home defeats, the 1st against Arsenal where we could have even advanced with a narrow loss, and the debacle against anderlecht, the clubs entire season rested on those 2 matches and we blew it, not even doing the double with the cup can salvage it.

Olympiakos winning the league title is the equivalent of a big English club winning the carling cup these days.

  11. The other teams need to lift and put up more of a challenge, the standard of today's 3-0 over Veroia was about 6 levels below Europa league level, training run intensity and players able to get away with poor technique. Anderlecht would be winning the same match by 5 goals without trying.

  12. I think we also need to accept that the state of the Greek league is also playing a huge part here, why is it every year olympiakos can pull off huge results in the early stages of the CL? Wins over Arsenal, Juve, athletic Madrid etc don't lie, I believe it's because the players are switched on because it's the early stages of the league, the problem is when the title is all but won in December the players treat the league games like training sessions, sure they try hard but the pressure is off, they can muck around and know even if a result goes against them they are so far in front they have nothing to worry about, switching from easy relaxed league mode to cutthroat European action mode is a major step up and now very regularly this team seems to get caught with its pants pulled down around February because they aren't prepared for the step up in intensity and pressure that accompanies European football.

  13. Never underestimate your opponent is the lesson to be learnt today

Silva is a sh*t coach, said it for a while when people were comparing him to Mourinho because Oly went on that winning streak, this showed how good he was and he failed big time.

The truth is the team lacks quality to compete on this stage, when you are depending on clowns like ideye up front you can't expect much. The team hasn't had a match winner since Campbell left.

  14. Basing it on the night the anderlecht players were far superior, I lost count the amount of times our players first touch was terrible, ideye would get the ball in space and almost trip over himself trying to control it, they were far more crisp and fluid going forward. They played a perfect game and the ref screwed them with the penalty, to me they never looked worried, the longer the game went the more you knew which team was gonna come out on top.

  15. The worst part is group stage champions league football for Greek clubs is finished for a very long time, because when the playoffs come around olympiakos have no idea how to play over 2 legs, that's why we are a rabble in Europa league, anderlecht played the 1st leg not to conceed an away goal, just because we had a few chances the Greek media started thinking that anderlecht were crap, when in reality they knew they could come to karaiskaki and 1 goal would kill us off, even going extra time it gave them 30 minutes to get an away goal..instead of chasing a 2nd and 3rd goal we retreated, just like we always do in a knockout scenario.

  16. Anyone can see that anderlecht are a superior team, fully deserved win, fitter, faster and players are technically better on the ball, they also had the balls to go for the win when we were playing for extra time, another gutless European performance, after pulido missed that chance early in the 2nd half they dominated us.

  17. Roberto with another gaffe!

It wasn't just Roberto it was the entire defence, they had 3 opportunities to clear the ball up the field, fkn idiots, if we copped a nice goal I can handle but to just hand it to them again is unforgivable.

  18. Yeh 3,600, excellent crowd considering the billionaires were playing at the same time and only got just over 7k at aami park, nice to see a lot of young faces in the crowd, non Greeks and plenty of females as well, corporate areas filled and of course a packed grand stand. Problem is due to the Grand Prix we have our next 6 games away from home so it's hard for us to build momentum, the day was such a success I think we could have had another big crowd with another home game.

As for the game Heidelberg were not that bad, they actually dominated possession and pinned us back for lengthy periods in the 1st half without creating much, they had lots of corners and set pieces around our box which we dealt with comfortably. defensively they were a shambles though and we hit them with some deadly counter attacks. Honestly I think if we didn't take off a few of our key players we could have hit them for double digits, as it turned out round 1 on a hot day took the safe option and just mucked around in the 2nd half. In general play it didn't feel like your typical smashing but when we broke forward with speed they couldn't get near us, the way we moved the ball from defence to attack at times you almost forgot you were watching local soccer lol

I think what this result has taught us is that pre season means nothing, Heidelberg went undefeated in all the friendly games they played and look a million bucks, by contrast south were very ordinary and some of our friends from Sydney would say the same thing when we played Olympic , but it's obvious after Sunday's performance that we were piss farting around in the practice games and had our sights set on this one, for round 1 we looked extremely sharp and we were so clinical with our chances.
