  1. Not saying Makarian is the coach of the future. He's 70. It would be foolish to think that. He's a stop gap until EPO pulls their head out of their ass. Karagounis selected him because he trusts him to do his job unlike the clown EPO hand picked in the summer.

  2. A lot of you underrate Makarian. Is he old? Yes. But he is a good coach and his resume shows that. It's laughable that people think Sakis Tsiolis is a good coach and fit to coach the NT when he's never held a stable job, never coached a team that actually had to contend for a championship, and neverb had European experience.

  3. While Mitro didn't play that well, at least he was sort of a threat. Really, the only bright spot was Ninis. The defense was porous, the midfield generally lacked imagination, Mitro I think will come around up front, but I'd like to see Samaras up there too. In goal, I think Karnezis is still the best we have, I don't think it's really his fault. These guys better play hard against Poland, or expect other players to be called up instead.

Sort of a threat? As in a threat to muff every ball that came to him? The guy hasn't been the same since his knee injury. He's damaged goods at this point.
  4. My first post since the game ended. I managed to watch the first half. I've read all the comments from every page and there's not much more I can say that hasn't already been said. I do want to add this though.

Now, hopefully everyone can see why we needed the KKM, or at least the KK combo, since 2009. The majority have called for these current pukes to start and play regular roles on the team for the longest time and now they've shown how utterly shi*t they are. The key to our success for the longest time was plain and simple hard work. The boys would strap on their work boots and put forth gritty performance after performance. It wasn't usually pretty, but it was effective and at the end of the day, the objective of the sport is the same: score more goals than your opponent by the end of 90 minutes. The key to our success was outworking our opponents and playing with heart, and never ever backing down.

Guys like Salpingidis, Samaras, Karagounis, Katsouranis, Maniatis, etc. wouldn't usually put on the prettiest of performances, but would work their asses off in both ends of the pitch. We also had solid leadership that has ultimately proved to be irreplaceable, at least for the time being.

I dreaded this day. It did occur to me at times, though, that we could be on a downhill after guys like Karagounis, Katsouranis, Salpingidis, Samaras and co. inevitably leave the fold. Of course, I never thought it would reach this low. Now it's just proven that these current pukes were successful for Greece when they were role players or played a part within the already in-place system. The moment that the aforementioned players left the fold, these players were unable to play in main, go-to roles and become leaders.

    Christodoulopoulos: shi*t

    Kone: shi*t

    Samaris: shi*t

    Mitroglou: shi*t

    Fetfatzidis: shi*t

    Ninis: shi*t

    Stafylidis: shi*t

And Manolas is slowly starting to piss me off too. Samaris rubs me off as a guy who got a big transfer after the World Cup and now the Ethniki is his morning frappe, but Manolas would keep his roots alive. He hasn't been anything close to spectacular after the World Cup, and certainly not like many of his performances for Roma.

I'm certain to get comments heavily opposing my current view of Ninis and Fetfatzidis but at the end of the day, while each has had some good performances for Greece, they were never big time game changers and cracked under pressure in each of their respective starts in tournaments. There's a reason why hard working Salpingidis was favored over both of them for the longest time.

The biggest problem is that we lack an identity. We're not fast, not defensive, not offensive, can't pass, can't cross, lack of target men that can actually head the ball, etc. At least the former crop knew their deficiencies and worked to their strengths. Also, I always felt comfortable winning a foul or even a corner (even though our corners weren't as effective as during the Otto days) until after the World Cup. No matter what, Karagounis was usually always very reliable for us. Defense, counter-attacking and set-pieces were our bread and butter. I felt 0 confidence with any of those since the World Cup.

    That's it for now.

Spot on. This is EXACTLY how I feel as well. This team has no identity and no leadership.
  5. Instantly. No Karagounis, Xolebas is on the left where they scored 2 from and create 5 chances. He is far better than Stafilidis. Already we are stronger.

There is nothing worse than having toxic and poisonous characters starting vendettas in the locker room. You are already at a disadvantage an indulging in self sabotage.

Bielsa picking the team is a man watching every single game he can like he did with his previous teams. Even Guardiola stated he is the best coac in the world. Put him in - with his own staff - get rid of the clika and agents. Already we have a chance.

So Karagounis is the reason this team can't function properly??? Aren't these the players everyone has been clamoring to see start for over a few years now? Kone, Fetfatzidis, Samaris, etc etc? You honestly believe that Holebas, who lied twice about being injured to play with Roma and skip out on the NT, was the reason they lost today? Keep telling yourself that.

Also, I have no idea why you think Bielsa would ever come coach Greece when he has a nice cushy job at Marseille.

  6. Its easy to rebuild. You just Bielsa and (the hard part) you need everyone associated with the old clika out the team and staff.

How exactly does that fix the issue? Is Bielsa going to magically find midfielders with high work rates who can actually do something or a striker who can, you know, strike? Is he going to teach Fetfatzidis how to shoot or Mitroglou how to control a pass or Kone how to run?

The coach isn't the real issue. The majority of thr blame falls on this current crop of players and the failure of EPO and the infrastructure to produce quality players from the youth level. You could hire Mourinho and he'd be an abject failure with this team too. Santos knew what he was doing by sticking to his guns and playing the players he knew could get results in his system.

Personally, I think they need to decide on an identity and how they want to play because right now, they have none. If that means go back to the stout, hard nosed defensive style then so be it. At least they will know what they are because whatever they think they are now is an abject failure. And you build the team from that foundation and you choose the players that complement that best. Because right now, this team doesn't excel at any one thing and doesn't know what to do on the field. The defense is subpar, the midfield is nonexistant, and the forwards are a word that means nonexistant but to a degree of infinity.

Everyone was sooooo keen to get rid of the older players and play with the "new" generation. Well, we're on coach #2 with this current crop and they still look like s%$#!.

  7. I doubt it. The PR machine is running full throttle over in Pireaus right now. Robinho, Berbatov, Pato, etc etc. They will go out and sign some washed up big name players to make a "Bam" signing.

They don't even have a coach right now.

  8. PAOK deserved what they got. Savidis has no idea how to run a team. Wasted millions on coaches, players, etc. He may say that he wants to battle the corruption etc but he hasn't done anything about it when given the opportunity to do something about it.

  9. Meaningless game, nothing performance. It's nice to see PAOK and their wasted millions finish last (suck one Savidis). Time for PAO players to get some rest and recharge because before you know it, the road to CL begins!
