Vasillis Spanoulis

Recommended Posts

NBA season hasn't started yet, our Greek hero Vasillis Spanoulis showing some signs he getting well aclamaited to the new league. The Houston Rockets played 4 preseason games. In those 4 games so far, Spanoulis scored 4 pts vs. Memphis, none vs. Atlanta, 6 pts vs. Dallas & 10 pts vs. Milwaukee. I watched some of those games, I notice how aggressive he is on defense, something most Greek players don't display (except Diamantidis and Papaloukas).

Van Gundy convinced that Spanoulis will become a productive guard

Despite watching rookie Vasillis Spanoulis endure a difficult week in his first NBA training camp, Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy in convinced that the Greek guard has a bright future.

Van Gundy said Spanoulis has the sort of work ethic and energy level that will keep him in the NBA for a long time, even if his rookie season turns out to be more of a learning experience.

"He has not played particularly well in the first two days, but I just feel he's going to be a good player in time," Van Gundy said. "He's got too many good qualities and the right mental makeup versus more physically gifted players who have come over. I just believe this guy has the right mental makeup to be a good NBA player."

Spanoulis, a second-round pick in the 2004 NBA Draft, would like to immediately earn himself a spot in Van Gundy's guard rotation.

However, the guard realizes there are aspects of his game that need improvement before he gets significant playing time.

He is primarily learning how to trim down on his turnovers and adapt to the American game that tends to isolate star players in favorable matchups.

"I'm being considerate of what coach is asking me to do," Spanoulis said. "I need to play good defense, understand coach's philosophy, attack the basket and work hard on my shooting range. I am getting better day by day."

After struggling in the fourth quarter of their three previous games, the Rockets finally seized control of a game in the closing minutes with a 97-90 win Monday night over the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden.

Rockets rookie Vassilis Spanoulis played 12 minutes because of the injury to Snyder. He had no points, one assist and drew a key charge against Stephon Marbury in the fourth quarter.

Finally he played some minutes. :gr: :gr:

HOUSTON -- Rockets guard Vassilis Spanoulis hasn't been in the NBA very long, but he's beginning to understand how difficult it is to earn playing time.

That's why he's looking forward to his first significant opportunity to earn some.

Spanoulis has moved into Houston's rotation after the Rockets lost guard Kirk Snyder to a broken right hand in Monday's loss to the New York Knicks.

The rookie's play will determine if he remains in the rotation, but he said after Wednesday's shootaround that he is looking forward to the opportunity.

"I've been working hard in every practice to be in good shape," Spanoulis said. "I've been patient. There's no pressure. I am ready to play because I have experience playing in games."

Before playing a season-high 13 minutes against the Knicks, Spanoulis had a total of six minutes of action in Houston's first 10 regular season games.

The guard should help the Rockets defend lineups with fleet-footed guards, but the key for Spanoulis will be keeping his turnovers down. He averaged 4.1 turnovers in the preseason.

Van Gundy said Spanoulis and maybe even rookie Steve Novak could earn minutes in Snyder's absence.

"(Spanoulis) is the next man up," Van Gundy said. "He's a better shooter than maybe he showed in the preseason. It's not that he doesn't have strengths, he just needs to limit his mistakes."

Van Gundy noted that Spanoulis has had to adjust to being on the bench and that he is probably looking forward to being on the court.

"He said to one of our coaches (earlier in the season) that, 'Everybody plays in Greece,'" Van Gundy said. "I understand how he feels and I know it's hard because he's famous in Greece and he's got pressure over there.

"It's been hard for him, but it hasn't been that hard," the coach continued. "(Former NBA guard and current Rockets assistant) Charlie Ward played 77 minutes as a rookie. OK, that's hard. He didn't even get to dress. What Billy has gone through, that's not hard. That's called the NBA. I expect him to be a sound player and when he gets the opportunity, we expect him to play well."

What kind of a name is that?

though I don't know what it means, it's a nickname he got once he was a streetballer. Rafer Alston was one of the greatest ever streetball players. Whether he's a better player than Spanoulis is another question, but that's the truth!!
