Man faces jail for referee hit

April 27, 2006

A VICTORIAN soccer player faces a possible jail sentence after he king hit a referee when he was shown a red card.

The incident came after Hoppers Crossing was awarded a penalty against Mill Park at a Western Victoria Soccer Association League match on July 23 last year, the Victorian County Court was told today.

Mill Park captain Chris Chrisomallis was issued a yellow card after he called referee Mark Ower "pathetic".

His brother Anastasios Chrisomallis, then aged 23, kicked the ball out of play and was also issued with a yellow card, then a red card for continuing with verbal abuse.

While the referee had his back turned, Anastasios Chrisomallis ran over and king hit him, the court was told.

Mr Ower suffered a fractured cheek and nose and a sunken right eye.

Chrisomallis pleaded guilty to one count of recklessly causing serious injury in a pre-sentence hearing today.

The charge carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in jail.

"It was an unprovoked assault, it was cowardly," defence counsel Tara Hartnett told the court.

"It is unsportsmanlike – that is an understatement – and disgusting, and we accept that."

Ms Hartnett asked Judge John Nixon to impose an intensive corrections order.

She said her client was devastated by his life ban from soccer, a sport he had played since the age of six.

Prosecutor Andrew Grant said Chrisomallis's road rage conviction in February 2002 was relevant to the current case.

Chrisomallis was fined $1,500 with conviction in the Heidelberg Magistrates' Court for approaching another driver with a baseball bat.

Judge Nixon will sentence Chrisomallis later today.

Does this surprise anyone that he's Greek??

Greek don't have this reputation in Australian society.

I can accept someone beating up someone else in self defence, but not to cowardly attack someone.

Just going on the report, the accused has an aggression problem. Shame he is a Greek.

He is a bad apple....most Greeks have better things to worry about...like white collar crime.
