Scottish Cup Semi Finals

Recommended Posts

Yesterday's draw for the semi final of the Scottish Cup has made the biggest possible shock even more likely: 2nd Division Gretna, who were only accepted into Scottish senior football in 2002, have avoided the 2 Edinburgh clubs Hearts and Hibernian and will again face lower league opposition.

The draw sees Hearts take on Hibs, while Gretna will meet the winners of the Dundee v Hamilton replay.

The high profile Edinburgh derby will take place a round earlier than the organisers would prefer, but the debate has begun as to the venue of the match. Both matches are due to take place at the 53,000 capacity Hampden national stadium in Glasgow, but Hearts have requested that the game be moved to the 68,000 capacity Murrayfield rugby stadium in Edinburgh.

If this move is successful, it could see the largest Scottish football crowd in the last 20 years or so - without either Rangers or Celtic in attendance.

Dark Horse, this is the Scottish FA Cup which is the main cup competition. It is an avenue into the Uefa Cup, which would see the lower league team qualify even if they lose to Hearts in the final - IF Hearts can hold onto 2nd place in the league.
