Celtic - Rangers (Old Firm)

Recommended Posts

A very comfortable victory for Celtic. Klos was clearly at fault for the goals, but Rangers as a whole played very poorly. They struggled with even the most simplest passes.

Celtic's Japanese midfielder Nakamura is beginning to look like an excellent addition to the team.

Irlandos, I appreciate your concern at the consequences of answering the Dave's question - the most frequently asked question in Scotland (and N.I. of course ;)). This is something that you grow up with here, from pre-school days, through education and into the workplace. In the past it was an openly used question, or alternatively "what school did you attend", to help decide if you were a suitable employee for a certain company. It still goes on today, but obviously not so blatantly.

Even when I answer "neither, Dundee United', I am always countered with 'come on, who do you really support', or 'ok, if Rangers play Celtic, who do you prefer to see winning' followed by a discreet wink. The most bizarre comment you will face is the 'you don't LOOK like a Rangers/Celtic fan'. I'm completely 100% serious that this is commonly stated. Sure there are historic geographical factors which could be taken into consideration, but a distance of 15 miles or so separates Scotland from Ireland. It's hardly African/Asian, is it!! The majority of people in the west of Scotland and N.I. - not only football fans, because let's face it supporting the Old Firm is about 30-40% to do with football - refuse to accept indifference as an option. This comes down to the simple fact that children are separated at 4 or 5 years old into schools of either persuassion, where it is very difficult to be an individual amongst the crowd. There are always the exception, but it really isn't worth the aggrivation it attracts. The progression from here through to adulthood is simple to understand, when growing up and socialising with school friends.

So far, I've not answered your question - but I'm sure you understand my point. I'm sure Irlandos could take a good guess if I told you my surname is the town of the Academicals in the Scottish 1st Division.

But even if it's worked out from that, it doesn't mean I would like to see them beat any other team in the league. A 'fan' for just the one day!!

Sad, but ultimately a true reflection of life in these parts.

The 3rd Old Firm derby of the season is minutes away, in what is surely the most important match of Alex McLeish's managerial career. The Rangers manager has been given 3 matches to turn around the fortunes of the club who have won only 1 match in their last 11.

Game 1: Celtic - Rangers

Game 2: Porto - Rangers

Game 3: Hibernian - Rangers

Get your coat Alex, I don't fancy your chances.

But if Rangers can upset all the odds and achieve victory today at Parkhead, you never know ..............
