mitsara vazelo skise tin golara

what a paiktara, one of the most respected strikers in europe....ask juventus fans about him,,,,he gave them lots of good memories.

i had the pleasure of seeing him play in the snow in oaka in 1991, but the bloke was class, and its a real shame that the diokisi treated him like s..t at the end.

i still believe he deserves a spot in paos management as he was a passionate panathinaikos player that was our simea and will never be forgotten.:))))

dimitri thanx for the memories :)))))))

Juan Jose Borelli - "Hota- Hota" 1991-1996

Played in the centre of midfield in a creative position and graced Greek football stadiums for 5,5 years until he moved on to Real Oviedo of Spain. Didn't completly adjust until his 3rd year at the club, but as soon as Juan Ramon Rocha took over as manager, he showed why 600 million drx were spent on him to bring him from River Plate. Was the master in midfield that took PAO to the Champions League semi finals in 1996.

Velimir Zaec " O Lagos" 1985- 1989

Velimir Zaec will always remain in the minds of Greek football fans for his precise passing and lethal duo he created with Juan Ramon Rocha in the midfield. No one could believe it when PAO signed the captain of Jugoslavia and Dynamo Zagreb in the summer of 1984 who had made fans rub their eyes with amazement in the 1984 European cup finals. Although "Zeko" suffered many injuries, he was a player that played with elegance and stature. He was born on 12/02/57 and played 57 times for Jugoslavia. He captained his country in the '82 WC and Euro '84. He too was one of the master minds of PAO reaching the semi finals of the Champions Cup in '84'-85 and the quarter finals of the UEFA Cup in '87-'88.

Antonis Antoniadis - "O Psileas"

His name is synonomous with the word "goal". Is the cubs 2nd all time scorer behind Krystof Warzycha. In his career he averaged .77 goals per game which is a recored by it self in Greece. He was born on the 25/03/46 in Xanthi/ Thrace and was top scorer in Greece in 6 seasons. in 1972 he scored 39 goals only second to the great Guert Muller(41) of West Germany winning the European silver boot. He was for many years a lethal scorer and was known together with Domazos as "Psilos kai kontos " of Greek football. He won 4 leagues and 2 Greek cups but peaked when he reached the Chmapions Cup final in 1971 against the mighty Ajax of Cruyff. He scored 10 of PAO's 14 goals in that campaign. he left PAO in the summer in the summer of 1978 for Olympiakos , only to return 6 months later, to finish his career with the one true club he truly loved.

Stratos Apostolakis "To Turbo" 1990 -1998

His signing from Olympiakos in the summer of '89 almost caused a "civil war" between the country. The Greek super cup was postponed to avoid the worse. As a footballer though he played his best years for PAO being one of the key players behind PAO's European runs in '92 and '96. He also played for the world 11 on 3 separate occasions. He coached PAO for 6 months in 2001.

Christos Dimopoulos "O Fonias" 1985-1991

Signed as a free agent from PAOK during the summer of 1985, he gave a good 5 year service to Panathinaikos scoring not many but crucial goals. Possible his best ever performance was in a league game vs his old team PAOK where he scored a hat-trick with PAO winning 3-2. He gained the nickname "killer" because when infront of goal would belt the ball with all his power.

Honors with PAO:

Giannis Kalitzakis "O Nintza" 1987-1997

A very tough and strong defender who although lacked skill on the ground was feared by opposing strikers since his tackling was very aggressive and his heading skills sublime scoring 17 goals from corner kicks and corners. Was signed from Paneleusiniakos in the summer of 1986 and was sent on-loan to Diagoras Rhodes, where he scored one goal that season in a game that ended 1-1, damaging PAO's title hopes. He returned to PAO the next summer. He first made his mark in the 1987-88 season in an UEFA Cup game vs Juventus where he marked the great Ian Rush out of the game.

Mimis Domazos - " O Stratigos"

Most probably PAO's greatest ever player and longest serving player. His recored seen that they will last forever. He was born in 22/01/42 and signed for PAO in 1959 from Amina Abelokipon at the age of 17 for a bottle of orange juice and his team for a full a football kit. He was known as the General and led PAO TO THE 71 European Cup final vs Ajax. Most memorable moment was when he scored in the 76-77 on the 2nd last day of the season in the Karaiskaki vs Olympiakos with an overhead scissor-kick for PAO to equalise and clinch the double.

Is there such a thing as PAO Hall of Fame? If not they should start one now! The younger ones (players and fans) should know what PAO means.

As a young fan in the 70s and 80s, I have to add all the boys that took the team to Wembley, including Pouskas. Then we have great players between 85-2000.

I agree with all the above choices, plus,

Oikonomopoulos (the greatest goalkeep on his good day), Konstantinou,

Delikaris, Kamaras, Filakouris, Grammos (on a good day), Kapsis, Kyrastas, Galakos, Alvarez, and so many others.

But, do you see that a very good player becomes GREAT when it's associated with SUCCESS?????!!!! I mean, we remember so many names because they were successful, domestically or internationally. In the last several years.... very disappointing....

I'm sure that many very nice players have come to PAO in the last 7 years, but few will be remembered in the future. That's too bad.

Just one? There's plenty left out.

  • Takis Loukanidis
  • Kostas Linoksilakis
  • Andreas Papaemmanouil
  • Frangiskos Sourpis
  • Kostas Eleftherakis
to name a few... I'm sure more unforgetable names will pop up.

Well guys, let's start making a Hall of Fame section on Phantis, with pictures, bios and everything. Anybody willing to help with collecting info and piecing together the puzzle for such a section?

Kostas Eleftherakis "To Elafi"

born: 18/07/50

First began his career at Fostiras and was signed by PAO in the summer of '68. His

appearance in the Champions Cup final vs Ajax was the highest point in his career. He also scored 2 goals during that campaign. Real Madid made a 35 million drachma offer for him after the signed Red Star coach Milianic who met PAO the season before but Aslanidis- the general secretary of Greek sport- left the offer in a desk draw even though it was a mythical amount of money at the time. Th same happend when Everton made an offer though Billy Bighan who coached Greece in the early '70's. He was such a good player that he was invited to play for the World XI. Sadly a serious knee injury finished off his career prematurly, not before he won another Greek league title with AEK in his penaltimate season

What about Demello? I know he wasn't around for many years but I don't think there was a better man taking free kicks in our existence...it's like he couldn't miss...I know he didn't do a thing during the games but when we needed him he was there...

no Krystof Warzycha?

he was one of the most well known players of your squad and scored lots of goals for you, no?

I did not get the opportunity to see him play a lot, but I still remember his incredible goal in Amsterdam :nw:

Krystof Warzycha 1989-2004

Words are too poor to descide Warzycha's contribution to Panathinaikos. He came unknown one afternoon in December 1989 from Ruch Horzof and at the airport the only people that greated him was the PAO management. PAO at that time was looking for a clas striker to compliment Dimitris Saravakos and when he was singed most fans did not expect much from this unknown 26 year old Pole. Giorgos Vardinogiannis, the PAO owner at that time trusted the words or Kazimir Gorski, a Polish coach who had won the double with PAO in 76/77 but also coached Olympiakos with great success too, saying to Vardinogiannis "Take Warzycha to PAO. You won't regret it".

Over the years he was to form lethal parternships with Dimitris Saravakos and Juan Jose Borelli bringing PAO fans to their feet countless times.

Warzycha debuted against AEK coming on as a sub in a 0-0 draw but was to break his duck in the next game vs Appolo Athens at Rizoupoli. 8 years later it would be the same ground where he would break Antonis Antoniadis' all-time goal scoring record.

Krystof Warzycha has set goal scoring records at PAO which may never be broken. He scored 244 league goals, just 16 short of AEK's Thomas Mavros' 260 which is the most ever making Warzycha 2nd top goalscorer of all time. This is already a massive feat, but what makes it bigger is the fact Warzycha only came to PAO at 26.

The break down of his goals per season in the League are:

1989/90 14

1990/91 18

1991/92 12

1992/93 32

1993/94 24

1994/95 29

1995/96 19

1996/97 21

1997/98 32

1998/99 12

1999/00 9

2000/01 13

2001/02 6

2002/03 3

2003/04 0

His highest moment was in the 95-96 season where with PAO he reached the semi-final of the CL scoring in PAO's 1-0 victory vs the Great Ajax team of the mid-90's. He scored 6 goals in that campaign for PAO.

Krystof has been honoured many times. Not only by PAO and it's fans, but from the opposition too. One of the biggest honours was being awarded a plaque by International Federation of History and statistics for being the 3rd highest scorer of all time still active in 2002-03 season.

But possibly his greatest ever ovations where at Olympiakos' Karaiskaki in 1994-95 season when he was subbed and given a standing ovation by PAO's bitter rivals as he was by the fans of AEK in the 1997-98 season when he was again subbed and given a standing ovation from the AEK faithful at the Nikos Goumas Stadium.

Greek Cup Honours: 5

Yiannis Kirastas 1981-1986

Another player like Apostolakis who came to PAO from Olympiakos and gave good service to PAO.After winning 5 League and 3 Cup with the "Reds" he took made the big and brave decision to move to Olympiako's greatest rival, Panathinaikos. He offered a lot to PAO since he came as a mature player and switched from his familiar right back position to that of full-back very comfortably. In his 1st year at PAO he won the Greek Cup vs Larisa whilst later on he captained PAO to the Champions Cup semi-finals vs Liverpool. He greatest domestic achievements with the club were the 2 "doubles" in '84 and '86 after thumping Olympiakos 4-0 in the Cup Final. He retired the next season after falling out with PAO manager of the time Tomislav Ivic. In his achievements he was one of the players to represent Greece in the 1980 European Championships.

Later on he was to return as PAO coach in the 200-2001 season where PAO narrowly missed out winning the league and before re-signing in his 2nd spell at PAO in the 2002-03 season, he qualified the team to the 2nd phase of the CL groups where PAO went on to reach the semi-finals.

Yannis Kirastas is though no longer with us. He died of blood disease in January 2004. He died aged 52.

Kostas Antoniou 1980-1994

Started of as a PAO junior and is the youngest ever Greek player to play in the Greek league aged 15,5 when there was a player strike. Then went on-loan to Appolo Athens before returning to PAO to serve for 15 years. Antinou was not a "fantasy" player but one that worked very hard on the right -side of midfield. His passing was excellent, seldom made mistake and even more seldom lost the ball. In a Cup game vs PAOK with PAO down to 10 men in extra time he came on as a sub and managed to keep the ball a corner flag for 3 minutes taking the game to penalties where PAO eventually won. He was also one of the best headers of the ball and many fans will recall him scoring from corner kicks and dead ball situations. He's always manage to score 9-10 goals a season which was pretty good going by a non-striker.

Years at the club: 15

One player that deserves to be in the hall of fame serving our team for nearly 15 years, most of which he was sitting on the bench without complaining, I am afraid will wait really long to be there....And I am not sure it is his fault......

I can't believe you put the bastard gay in the top players list. He is a son of bitch, he will have a nice greeting at Leoforos, not at the point where this greeting should be, but anyway...and he will never again set foot on anything having to do with Panathinaikos.

In our history, there were at least five gk's much better than this jerk.

One player that elder say he was fantastic and should have a special portait here: Haris Grammos!

I have watched the Wembley final and was really amazed by this player. Those who have seen the cd, might agree with me. My father has talked to me about the famous wings of Greek NT in the late 60's. Left winger was Botinos, an Oly legend, and right winger was Grammos. They were doing exceptional job, from what I've heard.

And there was another older friend from the GWF forum who had told me once: "Grammos? Take Seitaridis x10 in quality!" B)

Perhaps I am losing something here... From what I recall he went to oly for the money - he is a professional athlete - but apart from some stupid referee comments and his melos crap to seem good to gauroi, he did not say something specifically provocative and desrespectful for us. If I am loosing anything, let me know. But please understand that some things in our team suck in respect to recognition of players....even Warchycha :nw: was pissed and did not celebrate the championship last year....What about Libero(anagastike kai pige se mia dialumeni oikonomika omada-no offence to AEK- tin epohi pou itan o kaluteros mas epithetikos!!giati den thelame na tou dosome dio fraga prapano..Den ta goustaro auta kai min sas pithoun ta kavouria...)

I totally understand some people's short-run reaction:give him a nice welcome!!, but the hall of fame is a long-run thing: O Domazos :nw: :nw: :nw: pige stin AEK meta apo 17 hronia...

kai tote o athlitismos den itan epagelmatikos.

Note: I am not suggesting him to be the next in the hall. I just want your opinions (especially evergreen's who runs this) because there seem to be a small injustice for me.....
