Original Melbourne 21
AEK Athens Team Page Simply by making an return to the Top 16, perhaps unexpected due to a slow start in a tough group, AEK Athens becomes a dangerous team for any team it faces from now on. There are two reasons for that. One, AEK would seem to have nothing to lose after reaching a difficult goal already. And two, this team certainly seems to get better as the season goes along. After starting with three straight losses and a 1-4 record after a month's worth of games, AEK has been among the steadiest teams in the Euroleague, putting on a 6-3 finish by staying solid at home. Even on the road, AEK made its mark with a pair of road wins and a one-point loss to Maccabi in Tel Aviv, where only one visitors has won this season. AEK's season has proven that when the right balance is struck, a team can improve rapidly. One of the team's many big off-season acquisitions, center Sandro Nicevic, missed the first five games. But once he took up residence in the middle, everything came together for AEK. In nine games, Nicevic ranked sixth in average performance index rating (20.8 per game) based on his position among the best 15 scorers (15.6 ppg.), rebounders (6.8 rpg.) and free throw shooters (90% FT). With his role being well executed, all his teammates began thriving at what they do best: Nikos Hatzis (14.4 ppg.) lighting fires with his shooting skills (45.2%); Nikos Zisis dishing assists (4.8 apg.) better than all but one other Top 16 player; Quadre Lollis (6.5 rpg.) crashing the boards; Toby Bailey filling in the blanks. A high assists average (14.4 apg.) and low turnover average (12 per game) made the AEK offense efficient enough to have the 10th-best offense, 78.7 points per game. And anyone who looks and sees that the AEK defense allowed 79 points per game should realize that that figure is inflated by on game. Apart from Maccabi, held opponents under 80 points in all but three games. If its defense can rise up to the level of this team's newfound confidence, AEK will make make its presence felt in the Top 16, too.
