Athens 2016?

It's in the Daily Mail:

The IOC is so impressed by the way Greece has handled the Olympic Games that they are thinking of holding them in Greece more frequently than every 108 years.

This could come as soon as 2016!

Is it a good thing to hold them in Greece more frequently?

What is your opinion on this issue?

The Olympic games should be held in Greece every 4 years because they brought them to the world in 1896.

Modern Olympics you mean ? ...

The ancient Olympic Games were held in Olympia, Greece, every four years from at least 776 B.C. until 393 A.D., when they were banned by Emperor Theodosius. The first modern Olympics, in 1896, were staged by Athens.

Greece is one of four countries to compete in every Olympic Games, along with Australia, Great Britain and Switzerland.

Having said that, many have proposed to make Greece the Olympics permanent home.

BIG problem is MONEY $$$

Much more hoopla, sponsorship, and advertising is generated by moving the games around. Plus promotion of the city holding the games each time

The stadia were not filled in Athens for many events, and this was the event of a lifetime for our country!

Imagine if they are held here regularly.

Less interested will be the visitors also, who will not want to travel to the same place every time for the Olympics.

I do not think there is a chance of having the games in Athens in 2016, or any time close to that...unless there is no interest from other cities, which is very unlikely.

The IOC said that about Sydney too, they are being politically correct and this is their way of giving the approval for these Olympics...

The same IOC was threatening Athens 2004, that Sydney or Los Angeles were ready to hold the games if the venues were not ready on time...

They never meant it, it was just a scare tactic, they do not always mean what they say ;)

PEACE

I think Greece has done a tremedous job on the olympics

But i don't think it should be held in Greece every four years

One reason its b/c the games will not be has interesting in that less fan support.

The other being thats Greece is a very small country and will not be able to compete with the other big countries.

Finally the olympics is an international event so it can't be held at one place.

But i think they should give the games to Greece a bit more then twice every 108 years.

Paris France is bidding for the 2012 olympics and if they get it, it will be there 3rd host olympics

The United States has already hosted 3 games and also biding for the 2012 olympics and if they get that it will be there fourth.

I think the fair solution should be like this Greece should at least get the Olympics in 42 years

Reason being it will mark 150 years of the modern olympics games and then the olympic games in 2096 which makes it all fair.

Especially b/c as great the olympics have been in Greece they will be facing a deficit due to spending some much on securities and other areas they didn't expected.

They may have sold 3.6 million tickets (he most ever besides the sydney games)they probably could have gotten 2 more million alone if it wasn't this post 9/11 fear. Getting rid of so many tourists. The main blame for this is the American officials and the media (the NY times the main blame) constantly bashed these games and cost us money. Greece does get a bit of a blame b/c of they delays to but this is a small country and should have been expected

as for teh 2016 games i hope they get it

I missed a chance to go to Athens this year so i hope in my life time we can get the games so i cna see in person

Btw, Paris has a very good chance of getting the nod for 2012.

As for the US, they have hosted the Olympics 4 times that I can think of:

1904 - St. Louis

1932 - Los Angeles

1984 - Los Angeles

1996 - Atlanta

The 1904 "Olympiad" was made into a sideshow for the St. Louis Fair, took far too long to complete and nearly killed the modern Olympic Games. The IOC had to ask Athens to hold a special Olympiad, in 1906, to save them. It was a success.

The 1984 Olympiad was boycotted by the Socialist countries in retaliation for the US boycott of 1980. The TV coverage transmitted to the world was an absolute disgrace with minor events being preferred over major ones where non-Americans were the favourites. Europeans protested over this chauvinistic display in vain.

The 1996 Olympiad was even worse than the other two as a bomb went off in an Atlanta park killing a couple of individuals and injuring others. The opening ceremonies had nothing to do with the Olympic Games and culminated in a certain athlete - who had chucked his 1960 Olympic medal in the river - lighting the flame.

IOC President, Juan Samaranch, was not best pleased with this performance.

Greece gave birth to the ancient Olympic Games.

Greece gave birth to the modern Olympic Games.

Greece saved the modern Olympic Games when they nearly fizzled out.

Finally, Greece hosted a very successful Olympiad, making the connection with the first games (that others failed to make), providing security (where others failed) and providing facilities to our visitors and our own people, that few thought we were capable of providing.

Let's hear it for Athens 2016!

when you greeks wake up tomorrow the dream has ended

because you guys see and feel the cost of this really amazing event

we had great games, Athens had been really nice rebuild, organisation was perfect, but...

12 years will be a bit too soon ;)

don't underestimate the gigantic cost of such a project, a country like Greece simply cannot afford it to organise it twice in 12 years

(btw, in 2016 Brussels also could be a contender, but the people here don't support the olympic project of the government)

Ah! But the big costs will be avoided the second time around as the facilities already exist! :D

great idea........

next time dont waste money on the security!

why exactly again was Al Qaeda going to attack?

beacuse Greece is the enemy?

oh because Greece is near muslim countries making it all the more likely to happen even though the USA has higher % of muslims...

oh becasue of a few hundred american athletes are the #1 priority? COME ON. I LOVE AMERICA BUT THEY SHOULDNT FLATTER THEMSELVES SO MUCH TO BE CONSIDERING THEMSELVES PRIME TARGETS IN THE MOST STUPID SITUATIONS... if it was Politicians and generals competing maybe. but not athletes.
