ZeeKoei Posted August 24, 2004 Share Posted August 24, 2004 ATHENS, 24 August – The Greek Judo community is in mourning today following the death of promising +78kg class judoka Eleni IOANNOU. Originally selected to compete in the Olympic Judo competition, IOANNOU, 20, passed away earlier this morning at the Erythros Stavros clinic 18 days after falling from her third floor apartment in Nea Ionia. According to the medical reports, IOANNOU died from multiple infections. IOANNOU had undergone surgery for multiple fractures following the incident on Saturday, 7 August. Eleni Ioannou, 20, fell from her apartment in the Nea Ionia district at about 0330 and was taken to the Red Cross Hospital. "It is a miracle she is still alive... she is fighting for her life," said Ioannou's coach Giorgos Bountakis after visiting her at the hospital." Now they're at separate hospitals, after apparently jumping off the same balcony. The woman, who's a member of the Greek Olympic judo team, plunged to the ground on Saturday.
