Fyssas did not take part in the starting eleven against Porto in the portuguese supercup final . Trapattoni (Benfica coach) optet for Dos Santos, who played allright, probably because Fyssas played for the national team just two days prior.

Porto won 1-0 with a delicious goal by Quaresma.

Amazing game by Giourkas Seitaridis(already a fans favourite) who seemed to be everywhere in the defense.

It appears Fyssas is set to sign for Edinburgh club Hearts after training with the team yesterday.

Could be an interesting move for Takis. Despite not qualifying for Europe, the club are in the process of a major rebuilding exercise - bankrolled by the Lithuanian billionaire banker in charge at Tynecastle.

i read on goal.com that benfica have a 19 mill euro debt to pay off from stadium renovations to 'da luz' and they are getting rid of not only Fyssas but about 4 or 5 other players so they can pay off their debt.

Hearts is a good move, their coach seems to think highly of him so i think he can get himself a first team place which he couldn't at benfica.

Hearts sign Fyssas from Benfica

GLASGOW Aug 9 (Reuters) - Scottish Premier League club Hearts completed the signing of Greek European championship winner Takis Fyssas from Portuguese side Benfica on Tuesday.

The club confirmed the signing of the 32-year-old left back on their website and revealed manager George Burley had also lured goalkeeper Steve Banks from Gillingham.

Burley said of the Fyssas capture: "We are really pleased to bring in someone of his pedigree."

The double signings bring the total to seven new recruits under Burley.

Fyssas was an integral part of the Greek team who won Euro 2004, beating Portugal 1-0 in the final.

this is a pretty embarassing move.....takis fyssas has accepted retirement but we know he still has some game in him...he should have come home to greece and played for AEK or PAOK would be ideal signings for them.....

the scottish league is a complete waste of grass their football is terrible. Look at rangers with anorthosis that wasnt a team that was a bunch of thugs kicking the ball up the field. and i dont need to comment on Celtic losing 5-0 to a slovak side.....and hearts is a midtable with those crap teams???

Taki you can do much better.

You are the embarassing one... Hearts is a very good team with plenty of new players....and do not critise scottish football because they are as bad as greek football (in terms of club results) but at least they have very good (AND SECURE) stadium!!!!!!

And from what I saw in poland I am sur that pana wouldn't be able to with the Scottish league if they were on it......maybe 4th behind Rangers Celtic and hearts....

scottish league the same? yeah dont you wish! the coefficents are right to give you no auto spot! lets not forget what happened in ibrox last time a greek side went...

yeah and when was the last time scottish teams were beating sevilla, psv, barcelona, juventus, schalke, mallorca, liverpool, monaco, deportivo, porto, leverkusen etc etc..??

oh yeah Artmedia Bratislava - Celtic 5-0

meanwhile Rangers did beat Anorthosis but it was pure robbery....Anorthosis was cursed in front of goal and Rangers were utter garbage and thugs. Rangers were extremely lucky. Anorthosis completly outplayed them

and PAO may have lost in poland and played bad but Wisla is a strong team and that scoreline could have just as easy been 2-2...

and as for stadiums id take a rotting stadium from the 1920's with history and tradition than your stupid sponsor bought stadiums. the stadiums arent great but there only purpose is to hold people not to look nice or advanced. as for secure??? greek matches sometimes have hooliganism but generally always safe. and what Celtic-rangers games dont have this?

Hearts must have more money because Fyssas is looking into his retirement fund...

PAO 4th in scotland????

man we beat the crap out of Rangers with a 2nd team midfield 3-1!

10 Scotland 5.625 6.625 7.375 7.375 4.750 31.750 4

And for the rangers celtic story... believe you feel fully secure in Rangers-Celtic but you cannot say the same about any greek games......

Last thing about your questions "yeah and when was the last time scottish teams were beating sevilla, psv, barcelona, juventus, schalke, mallorca, liverpool, monaco, deportivo, porto, leverkusen etc etc..??"

Whao................chill out!

Drakos........there are no sponsor built stadiums in Scotland. There is not that much money going about. All clubs have had to rebuild their own stadiums and that has put them all in debt for years. The government told clubs to rebuild after Hillsborough and all the money went on stadiums and not on players, that caused a big problem with football development in smaller teams(Where the big teams steal their players from)All except Rangers, who rebuilt long ago after several tragedies where many people died.Crumbling stadiums with history and tradition are one thing but peoples lives are way more important.

Well said Nelly.

Anyway, getting back to the topic at hand...Fyssas. I'm happy for the guy. I hope he does well in Scotland and furthers his career outside of Greece. As much as many of you guys don't see Scotland as a place where one can further thier career, he has decided otherwise and as such, people should respect that decision and move on without blasting another country's league championship.

Fyssas made his Heart of Midlothian debut today.........a 3-0 away victory at Dundee United.By all accounts a very good team performance.George Burley is a good manager, which he showed at Ipswich and has got himself some good players.3 games,3 impressive victories.

There is talk of the 'Jambos' having their best season in years.Fyssas could find himself in amongst the start of a revolution.Hearts were a very big club a long time ago with regular 40-50 000 crowds. In their new, smaller stadium they will easily fill it and this could be the begining of something very big.If that's waht happens when you're thinking about retiring then I cannot wait. :D

i dont know britain but Ibrox sounds like a sponsor to me.....either that or its quite a stupid name for a stadium.

as for Hearts.....Takis could have done way better....

apparently Skacel scored today..... .......i wasnt sure what to make of the guy somedays he was good and others he was pathetic......

and scottish have done it twice....this fact sould end the discussion......

For the ibrox story may be you should do some reading before to say silly things....

He may sound stupid for you....but maybe scottish people feel the same about the names of greek stadium....so respects other culture....

and how does that end the discussion? that was back in the 60's! by your arguement the hungarian league is in the top 5!

as for Celtic in 2003 final had they drawn Porto in the quarterfinals it would have been Panathinaikos in the final instead...give/take.....

theres no question the scot league and hearts is a big step down for Taki...hes played with Panathinaikos and Benfica and both are in better leagues and more competitive.

as for ibrox i had no idea it was a name, sorry.......it doesnt sound to me scottish/british at all so i figured it was a telecomunication company or something ..

I think some of you should tone it down a bit a show a bit more respect for Hearts, Scittish football and your fellow poster.

Hearts has shown they are very ambitious this season and at the age of 32 where did you expect Fyssas to be transfered? Bayern Munich?

Scottish football is a lot more organised and with better facilities at its stadia. At least the Scottish FA respects football fans.
