Two of the groups will have 3 teams, and one 4 teams. The top 2 teams from the 3-team groups, and the top 3 teams from the 4-team group qualify to the Quarterfinals. The women's competition will start on 11-Aug-04. the final and 3rd place game will take place on 26-Aug-04. So far only Greece as the host have secured a spot in the Olympic competition. the remaining 9 spots fwill be filled as follows: Africa: 2 Asia: 1 Central and North America: 2 Europe: 2 Oceania: 1 South America: 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Harry Posted June 9, 2004 Share Posted June 9, 2004 Here's a tidbit: ATHENS, Greece (AP) - The U.S. women's soccer team will face host Greece and 2003 World Cup quarterfinalist Brazil in the preliminary round of this summer's Olympic tournament. The 10-team field was divided into three groups at Wednesday's draw. The Americans, who won the silver medal in 2000, were placed in Group G, where they will also play Australia. Three of the group's four teams will advance to the quarterfinals. Sweden, Japan and Nigeria comprise Group E. Mexico, China and 2003 World Cup champion Germany were placed in Group F. In the 16-team men's draw: Greece, South Korea, Mali and Mexico will play in Group A; Paraguay, Japan, Ghana and Italy were placed in Group B; Argentina, Serbia-Montenegro, Tunisia and Australia comprise Group C; and Costa Rica, Morocco, Iraq and Portugal will play in Group D.
