From August 31 till September 17 the 40th European Basketball Championship will take place in 4 different countries. The final stage will be in Konstantinoupoli. This is the last Eurobasket that is organised every two years. From 2017 the continental championships will take place every four years.

Of course Greece will participate. Greece is in group A that plays in Helsinki. Opponents are Poland, France, Finland, Slovenia and Iceland. 4 teams advance to the knockout stage in Turkey.

The preliminary 16-man squad selected by coach Kostas Missas: Yiannis Bourousis, Kostas Papanikolaou, Kostas Sloukas, Giorgos Printezis, Nick Calathes, Vangelis Mantzaris, Yiannis Antetokounbo, Thanasis Antetokounbo, Dimitris Agravanis, Zach August, Kostas Mitoglou, Tyler Dorsey, Giorgos Papagiannis, Yiannis Papapetrou, Nikos Pappas, Giorgos Bogris. 4 of them won't make the cut.

So the Greek basketball federation decided to "hire" 2 African-American players to represent our country?

ML, I did not know them either before they were in the preliminary squad, but both their mothers are Greek. Lea Tzimoulis is the mother of August. Samia Konstantinidou is the mother of Dorsey. And well, you know how Greeks are. Even if you are 1% Greek and 99% something else you are Greek. A passport is ready in an eyeblink.

In both of those players,  they are half Greek through their moms.  I see nothing wrong with them representing Greece as long as they identify as Greek.

Why not, Niko?! But it's not necesarry to beat them. First four advance. But it would be wise not to end as fourth in the group as you have to face #1 from another group.

Greece beated Great Britain today with 84-88. The scheduled match for yesterday was not played. Do not know why, but could be because they will face each other again in World Cup qualifiers in November 2017 and February 2018.
