U.S. manufacturing job openings at 2007 levels

President-elect Donald Trump wants to "bring the jobs back."
But there already are many job openings right here in America, even in manufacturing. The bigger challenge is filling them.

In October, there were 322,000 job openings in manufacturing -- about the same level as in 2007. It has tripled since hitting a low of 99,000 during the recession in 2009.

http://money.cnn.com/2016/12/21/news/economy/job-openings-manufacturing-trump/index.html

What do you want to bet that Trump will try and take credit for this as well?

Oh, com'on guys..... As I indicated in my post, "truthiness" [look closely]....

if I want to believe something as true, then it is true! And, by the way, can YOU, or anyone, prove to me he didn't say it?..  No, you can't!

I'm expecting to get support by the usual crowd here who have used this kind of "logic" to prove their points.....   Hey, guys, if you play by such rules, why can't I?

Oh, those must be librul lies! We know CNN as part of the "most dishonest" news media cabal.    [I'm being sarcastic. I wish more people looked up Snopes, especially those idiots who perpetuate conspiracy theories]

OK, I understand when V. Putin is liked by 37% of the Republicans [traitors?], because, after all, those cons love big brother (or spanking father) figures who are authoritarian.

But, 52% of Repubs believe Trump won the popular vote!   [he lost to HRC by 2.8 million votes]  Trump himself, who now loves the Electoral College, keeps saying he won the election by a landslide!  [the EC vote margin: 46th out of 58 elections].

Reality is warped in Drumpf's world and con universe.

It is truly scary how many elected officials are willing to hurt the country in the name of partisanship. If Obama cured cancer and brought world peace they would still find a way to spin it as a negative.

I'm not sure where you pulled out that out from, what I was trying to say was that the republicans fought obama on anything and everything, just off of partisanship, to not allow him to get anything done. That hurts the country.

Not to leave out Trump's kind hearted family. Here's a shot with his two kids, Donald Jr. and Eric.

Killing for fun! How disgusting of a creature is one to kill a living being for the fun of it?

If shooting and killing a beautiful animal like that gets your rocks off, there's something inherently and fundamentally wrong with you.  Horrible picture @JimAdams but definitely very illustrative.

Oh, stop it.... How about those missing emails? And the Clinton Foundation???  Did I forget Benghazi?? Or, the pizzagate (trafficking underage for sex)....

What's wrong with those Drumpfs asking for big $$$$ from people who have lots of money and want to go hunting with the Trumpies, or giving the donors a chance to meet their daddy?  It's not the same as pay-for-play Hillary was doing! She tried to hide it (and she did a great job since we can't find that connection) whereas the Trumpies are doing in the open!

Same with appointing the head of Exxon-Mobil to be Secy of State!  The conflict of interest is right there in the open!  You libruls...

But he might be drunk one night at 4 in the morning and send out a tweet that pisses off somebody enough to do some crazy sh***, that is the rationale for the JOKE, the man is offensive and not apologetic about it, it is one thing in business or reality tv, international relations and the position he holds is not the same, in any case the tweet was a joke.

What was your question?

Obamacare, his prized piece of legislation, was a bill designed to destroy the private health insurance industry and for the government to then step in and solve the crisis by taking over the industry, i.e., socializing healthcare. Republicans huffed and puffed, but Obama still got his way. The problem for Obama was that he wasted most of his political capital in doing so and therefore had less political weight in achieving other aims.

I don't understand what Americans have against a medical safety net.  It's known that expenditure is approximately triple in the U.S. compared to other OECD nations.  Now, I'm not saying Obamacare is the right way to go (I don't really know much about it) but the gouging and rorting done by the private healthcare companies in the U.S. is almost criminal.  At least, in a moral sense.

Regarding Trump's tough guy, not gonna take any s**t approach, I dare say as offensive and irresponsible as some may find it, with certain leaders and nations around the world, it could actually be more effective.  I say could, because it hasn't really been tried before, but the softly softly approach hasn't exactly yielded stellar results either.  Let the experiment begin!

George Orwell also killed an elephant once. He wrote about it in fact.

Cool references, personally killing purely for sport is kind of revolting. If you can use as much of the animal as possible for some purpose afterwards besides hanging its stuffed head on a wall that ain't so bad.

I get what you're saying, but it made sense 5,000 years ago.  As for the argument of "doing what we always have", man has also murdered, raped, plundered, maimed etc. etc.  Doesn't make it cool or right.  Kill something because it will keep you alive ? Cool.  Kill something just coz it felt good.  Not cool.

P.S. Like tantra said, you are one of my favourite posters.  But I can't condone this sort of thing, especially today when so many species are on the brink.

Yu might be right, but why should that justify the US being among the very few if not the only First world country without basic health care for all citizens? Some things are more important than profit. Even Cuba can manage that.

On healthcare it's a matter of principle. The US leads the world in innovation and wealth creation. Other countries and healthcare systems basically piggyback off of it. The British, Cuban, and Canadian healthcare systems owe almost everything to American development in research and technical progress. And over time healthcare costs will be reduced and therapies/treatments all the better. Just like how in the 80s cell phones looked like bricks and could only be purchased by the Gordon Geico's of the world, but now just about everyone has one these days and they're vastly superior.

Maybe, and I say maybe because I haven't researched the area in detail.  What I do know is that in Australia we have the PBS Scheme (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pharmaceutical_Benefits_Scheme) which is basically the government pools all the money and makes deals with big Pharma on what to buy, how many units, and what they are willing to pay.

I can tell you that big Pharma hates this because they are in the unusual position of not having the upper hand in the bargaining.  This was one of the first and most important issues raised in the FTA between Australia and the U.S. but no government here would ever give in on this issue.  Might as well hand in their resignation that day.

It's not like big Pharma aren't making profits in Australia.  It's just not the profits they want.  Having said that, we pay through the nose for other things.

It's a tricky question to model.  You don't give decent health care to Juanito and as a result he develops a condition which means he'll never be able to earn as much as he could've if it was treated cheaply.  So, instead of earning say $50,000 (and the government reaps the rewards in taxing him) he only earns $10,000 and worse, he's actually a drain because he now requires benefits.

The same argument could be made for education as well.  Again, difficult to model and you'll find those that do often already know the result they want (they are already biased by their politics) and "research" and "model" accordingly.

A record number of Democrats are lining up and declaring themselves as Democratic candidates for the 2020 Presidential Elections in the USA.
Pete Buttigieg caught my eye the other day in a town hall meeting televised on CNN. I thought he was a well spoken young man, with ideas and values that I agreed with. He needs 65, 000 donors to be invited to the Democrats debate. I would like to see him there, so I donated to his campaign.

      This is from BBC:
Vegan protests: 'Un-Australian' activists arrested, PM Morrison says
Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has criticised animal rights activists as "shameful and un-Australian" after dozens were arrested in nationwide protests.
While - I have to admit - I'm note sure where PM Scott Morrison stands on issues, It looks to me like taking out a page from the Orange Orangutan's (Donald Trump) book. Divide the country in an effort to conquer. Pitch one group of people against another and start creating a condition that is hostile to people sharing values. Probably now is a good time to break up labor unions also?
It seems that everywhere one turns, it's a right wing full frontal attack to the voice of the people.

      Inexplicable decision
Online government portal Diavgeia turned out to be one of the most important reforms carried out in Greece over the last few years. A decision by today?s leftist-led coalition government to dismantle the transparency initiative program was based on absolutely unfounded excuses and represents a major setback. The government portal allowed citizens to have access to decisions regarding state recruitments and procurements, the expenditure of public organizations and other interesting information.
In the absence of Diavgeia, what is more than certain is that the corrupt and the wasteful will once more be able to hide behind a veil of nontransparency. The removal of the transparency portal was no doubt an incomprehensible decision on the part of the SYRIZA-Independent Greeks administration.

Trump is not the problem; the DNC (i.e. the Democratic National Committee) is.
When Carter (screwed by OPEC, unpopular thanks to OPEC, and sabotaged by his own party) was defeated in 1978, the Democratic National Committee decided that the plebe that voted Democratic could not be trusted to choose electable candidates. In the future the DNC would choose its own super-delegates who would enable the choice of good candidates.
In 2016 those who read newspapers read that:
The super-delegates were 15% of the total. Therefore, if the elected delegates were Sanders 49% and Clinton 36% of the total, Mrs Clinton would have been the Democratic candidate.
At the New Hampshire’s primary Sanders received 60.4% of the poll vote and Mrs Clinton 38%, of the poll vote. Sanders had 15 voted delegates; Mrs Clinton had 9 elected delegates and 6 superdelegates. Is that possible that the the D in DNC stands for Double-dealing?
On October 30, 2016, the DNC interim chair Donna Brazile was fired from her position as a political commentator at CNN over e-mail leaks suggesting she had improperly supplied Hillary Clinton’s campaign with advance knowledge of debate-questions.
Let us move beyond the lady Macbeth aspects of the DNC. How idiotic must one be in order to manage to lose an election against a pathetic bimbo? This demands great talent. Examples:
α) Trump brags that he will bring the factories back to the USA; the DP claims that the new factories will use robots and the unemployed will remain unemployed.
β) The DP is all for clean energy. What about the coal-miners in WV? Under the DP plan they will live longer because of cancer avoidance. Moreover, since they will have less money, their life-span will feel even longer.
γ) In the US the members of every group live, on the average, longer than the previous generation. With one exception; low-class whites. To the best of my limited knowledge, the DP has no plan for them.
My impression is that Trump is not the problem. The doctor Frankenstein that created him is.

We had another mass shooting in the US, this time in Las Vegas, the deadliest of its kind, until the next one of course. Our right to be safe is trampled by the right for someone to own military-grade weapons.
We had hoped that after the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre, Congress would act to pass some federal gun safety laws. Nothing!  The victims' stories and pictures in Vegas are beginning to circulate now. I'll leave you with the images of the children of Sandy Hook as a horrific reminder that how a political party and its leaders are essentially in the pocket of the gun lobby.

Pentagon Officials Allowed Workers to Use Government Credit Cards at Strip Clubs

The initial 2015 audit discovered that workers spent nearly $100,000 at various strip clubs and related adult-oriented establishments, which kinda sounds like nothing when compared with the estimated $1 million spent at casinos. As for how exactly such charges are allowed to exist, the report's findings suggest that Defense Travel Management Office officials and DoD management did not properly explain how the travel cards should be used. Furthermore, DoD officials were not adequately trained on how to discipline those found to have misused the cards. For the complete rundown, read the full report right here.

The British parliamentary election is only a week away now and it looks like it will certainly be a hung parliament. Hard to predict what will happen, but we could end up with some sort of rainbow coalition of miss matched parties. What is your guys thoughts on this?
