2016 - 2017 Season

Recommended Posts

Well maybe you been away for a week, but the game is up for Alafouzos..

From post 356 continuing for the next few pages.. All his assets are now frozen.

http://forums.phantis.com/topic/14387-giannis-alafouzos/page-18

As for Meli, he is on a scale far beyond Marinakis - we are talking Government level bribery to secure OPAP. That is Russia oligarch level. During the time of negotiations with OPAP, Costas Louropoulos, OPAP's chief executive, felt put under pressure by Mr Melissanidis in a series of telephone calls. 'He insulted me, as on many previous occasions...''You dare to sign [the Intralot (Kokkalis!) and lottery contracts] and I will take your head off.'' He has threatened countless people - and their families over the years. Aegean Oil has a history of death threats delivered from Meli to journalists. Nearly all the death threats from Meli over the years include threatening the victims' children and family - in exactly the same language - he doesn't even bother mixing up his threats. Always bomb threats, decapitation and death to the guy's kids and wife. A ref recently was threatened by Meli last season - which again was splashed all over the media - not the first ref either.. Everything Meli has done over the years is still online. His Wiki page has about 5% of it - but it is a good start if you have no idea of what he has been up to over the years to acquire his billions. As they say, behind every great fortune is an even bigger crime. Melissanidis has actually been convicted of bribing two players in an amateur football league in the 80s.. Nearly all his other court cases have ended in acquittal - as in most cases - the public prosecutors refused to turn up to trial..

No one is clean. The only one I have not read any dirt on - well in Greek anyway.. is Savvidis. Maybe some Russian knows something, but from what I can see - he has either been fairly clean in Greece or at least covered his tracks better than Meli, Marinaki and Alafouzo.

Thank for the insight, I was unaware!

Only difference with Meli is that he doesn't want to control the league only for AEK to dominate it and win the league each year and also win CL money. He may want control but he does want a fairer competition between teams/more competitive league, he has also said he wants ALL Greek teams to have their own stadiums built/renovated. So lets not put Marinakis and Meli in the same boat as they are very different.

As for Kontonis good on him, about time we had a Minister with balls and who can say it how it is, regardless of who's behind him or supporting him, Oly fans don't like things the way they are as its unknown territory to them as they have always gotten whatever they wanted, times are changing.

Does Meli text you at night to tell you how fair he is?

Do you guys think that there's a problem with countries that aren't able to run their own domestic sports leagues?

I think you know what I'm talking about.....   Yes, I understand the foreign interests that don't want Greece to succeed, etc, but what is it in some countries that nothing works well?*  As far as I know, the "Super League" :w00t1: was put together and run by Greeks.

*few years ago, I had looked into some numbers regarding the popular approval of institutions [gov, democracy, public service, church, police, heath care, sports, revenue service, government, education, etc,] in Greece and none, except the defense forces broke the 20% approval..... Any country that has such low respect for its institutions is in deep crisis.  And, this is a measure of the health of a country.

I hear what you're saying, Reaper. But, let's assume there's a rule that says an organization has to be self-governing. Then what should happen if the mob takes over? You let it be?
In the US, we know that the FBI had to bust up the mafia in unions, casinos, construction, all sorts of activities in the 1970s and 80s. All for the better as we see today.

Now, I'm not saying that Kontonis is doing the right things (I just don't know enough), but I/we do know that EPO has been utterly corrupt. The definition of insanity is to keep doing the same failed thing expecting different results every time....

When the hell is Greek Super League 2016-17 going to commence for god sakes!!!????? ...
It was supposed to start August 21st. Then they said it will start 10th September. Now they say it may not start 10th September. Now this is becoming ridiculous. It cannot start in October. Surely !!! ..... then FIFA/UEFA will be asking questions.
I know there is an issue between that imbecile Kontoni and EPO (they are idiots too). I heard FIFA-UEFA made negotiation with Kontoni to change the refs and get rid of the current EPO board. But EPO didn't take a step back, and it's all up in the air now lol.

I don't understand why girtzikis won't step down. He knows that September 9 he will be forced out. I read an article that he is trying to negotiate keeping his seat until the elections in October AND be on the ballot in the election lol.

Maybe he thinks he has a strong hand ?

Maybe he has an ace up the sleeve we don't know about ?

Maybe the way things run in Greece is so ingrained in him that he knows no other way ?

Or just maybe, he's an idiot. ;)

To change subjects, in anticipation of the season starting, I read that there have been 229 transfers made in the GSL for the 2016/17 season at a total value of 38.58 million Euro.

Most of these transfers were either loan deals or free transfers. To put in to some perspective, over a billion euros was spent on transfers in the EPL. There were a number of individual transfers that were larger than what the entire GSL spent.
