Superleague/Football League/Greek Cup TV Coverage

Recommended Posts

Since this week all the Superleague games take place at the same time (19:00 GR), television coverage will be spotty for us outside of Greece.

In Greece all the games will be live on the various Nova Sports channels.

In US, Canada and Australia Antenna Satellite/Pacific will show the Kerkyra - Panathinaikos live and PAS Giannina - Ergotelis on tape.

Sport Plus will show all games live via multi game coverage, switching between games as needed. After the games finish they will show four games on tape:

Veroia - Panthrakikos  (1:00 pm CDT)

Xanthi - Tripoli (3:00 pm CDT)

PAOK - Levadeiakos (5:00 pm CDT)

Olympiakos - Kalloni (7:00 pm CDT)

Superleague and Nova Sport extended their current contract for exclusive broadcasts of Superleague games in Greece until 2019. The deal is worth 34  million Euro per year.

Two teams did not vote for this extension, PAOK and Panathinaikos, and will be free to negotiate their own deal after 2017.

More details are emerging concerning the new deal between Superleague and Forthnet (Nova Sport).

For the 2017 - 2019 period Superleague will receive 81 million Euro from Nova Sport that will be divided among the 14 teams that voted for this deal.

The rights are for TV, internet, mobile phones broadcasts to Greece, Cyprus and Albania.

Yes, they did not sign the 2017-2019 extension. Don't know what the reasons for Panathinaikos are, but PAOK said that it's too early to sign a new contract, and they were not happy the way the internet rights were structured. Maybe they'll try to get a better deal somewhere else. In any case they can eventually still come back and join the collective agreement. It's been done in the past.

PAOK is not happy how the international rights to the Superleague were handled in the past. Today during the Supeleague meeting they raised the question and asked for investigation.

Superleague voted to go ahead with negotiation for the international rights with the two companies that expressed interest, Forthnet (NOVA) and TAF Sports. PAOK is the only one that voted against until past issues are resolved. If Superleague signs an agreement and PAOK is not part of this, the chance is that we won't be seeing their home games next season.

Right now the international rights are under negotiations. On Wednesday Superleague will decide if the international rights will be awarded to Forthnet (owners of Nova sports). The other bidder was TAF Sports, who held the rights in the past, but it appears that all the Superleague teams except PAOK are leaning towards Forthnet. We will know more on Wednesday.

Now what does it really mean as far as the coverage in USA/Canada/Australia? My speculation is that if Forthnet gets the rights, all the games, except for PAOK's home games (unless PAOK changes their stance), will end up on Sport Plus. I base this on the fact that last season Sport Plus carried a lot of Nova Sports programming. If that happens, I would have to conclude that Antenna will  no longer be showing Superleague games.

As usual the situation will be cleared at the last possible moment.

^^^ I don't think Antenna Pacific/Satellite can afford to not show at least some Greek football. A lot of their advertising (website, etc) is focused on this. And we don't have Sport Plus here at the arse end.

If they don't show anything, bye-bye antenna for me...

The other reason Antenna might not pick up the Superleague games is financial. Antenna is having major financial problems, and they have been laying off a lot of people in Greece. They might decide to just stick with the Greek Cup games, which they will show this upcoming season.

It appears as though SportPlus is connected to Nova in some way (the sports shows it airs are all from Nova Sports), if there is a connection then I would think that the smart money would be on SportPlus acquiring exclusive rights to the Super League which would also give the owners a stronger hand in negotiations to expand carriage of the channel.  If they do acquire the rights to all games then they should look at converting the channel to HD, SD quality doesn't cut it for a sports channel in 2015.  Here in Canada the channel is sold as an add-on to the Greek package on Bell Fibe for $10.- quite expensive for an SD channel IMO.

Antenna should look at acquiring the Greek language rights to some National team games as well as Champions League/Europa League matches involving Greek teams.  These matches would bring in as many viewers as the Super League does, perhaps more?!

Sport Plus is advertising that they will soon come to Australia on the MySat platform. Don't expect a big improvement in picture quality either. They are better than Antenna, but still average at best.

Just saw an announcement on Sport Plus saying that starting this weekend they will have coverage of 2015-2016 Superleague. It remains to be seen if they will have all the teams, or if they will split it with Antenna as in the past.

Interestingly the program schedule of Antenna Satellite lists Superleague games this weekend, but they are old games from past season labeled as Superleague - Best Of.

Sport Plus is showing the following games this weekend:

Kalloni - AEP Iraklis  (Saturday)

Atromitos - Levadeiakos (Sunday)

Olympakos - Panionios (Sunday)

Veroia - PAS Giannina (Sunday - on tape)

This leads me to believe that once again it will be split coverage between two channels, since they are not showing any of the other games.

With this in mind the way things shape up right now:

SPORT PLUS

Olympiakos

Veroia

Kalloni

Atromitos

OTEHR CHANNEL (ANTENNA?)

Panthrakikos

AEK

Panaitolikos

UNKNOWN

PAOK (they have declined to sign the deal between Superleague and Forthnet and might be kept out from the package)

Not sure why you guys keep paying that kind of money for 2 channels. IPTV yes you need internet but you get so many greek/English channels 720p you never miss any games plus movies

The IPTV providers here don't all offer all the sports channels.

Which provider are you with? Do you get all the OTE and Nova sports channels with your subscription?

^^^ Blackhawk, sounds like PAO will also be on Antenna? They haven't advertised anything as yet.
