Kostas Mitroglou ‒ (now playing for Aris)

He is a good player but he also has his faults.  He can be an extremely dangerous striker in the right system with the right teammates.  He has some really good players around him in Benfica which obviously benefits him.  The service that he gets on the Greek NT is laughable at the moment and it won't change any time soon so it's up to him to get more involved when playing for Greece. Even though he has the body and size of a target man he actually plays better with the ball on his feet and shielding than winning high balls with his head.  He is our best option at the moment and in the near future and the only legit goal scorer that we have.

He has terrible distribution with the NT. All he is fed is long-balls and crosses; Nothing of substance. Give him Ninis of a creative attacking midfielder that can keep the ball on the pitch and you will see a new Mitroglou for the NT.

This was true in the past but with Fortounis and Mantalos in the side his service has improved. The problem Mitro has been having is his first touch. It's like he's wearing leaden boots all the sudden. Never seen a player regress that much. I guess if he's not having that problem at Benfica you could blame the service but many of the passes into him have been pretty basic and he ends up mis-controlling and losing the ball.

i thought he played well yesterday except for his finishing. he should have made the 0-4 against besiktas where he came 1on1 with the keeper and he hitted the bar 2 times in a row after a free kick. benfica came up 0-3 but ended the match with 3-3. i didnt understood why benfica's coach subbed him off 4 minutes before time since he did fine holding the ball upfront where jimenez is not that kind of player. the 3-3 fell in the 89th minute. second half benfica made some mistakes including the coach and gave away a stupid penalty. if they win their last match at home against napoli they are trough and first in their group. samaris came on somewhere in the second half and did ok.

Mitroglou playing for Olympiacos & Benfica is more dangerous in getting in regular goal scoring positions than with the National Team because he would have a very dangerous goal scoring attacking midfielders, wingers or co-striker playing around him which makes it difficult for defenders to man mark him out of the game the way it seems to be with the national team. With the National Team the opposition put two men on Mitroglou & have Fortounis not a inch of space being man marked & Greece have nothing in attack. In the past Fetfatzidis, Ninis, Kone, Lazaros & even Holebas when fit & in form would all love to run & take on defenders which then isolates Mitroglou.

  • 3 weeks later...

Has lost his starting spot over the last 3 or so games. Didn't start last week in the crucial UCL game against napoli. Benfica lost but because Beskitas got trounced they managed to scrape through with 8 points.

Hopefully he gets his starting spot back sooner rather than later

Kostas Mitroglou scored in the 43rd minute, to give Benfica a 0-2 lead away to Guimaraes just before half time & the score remained Guimaraes 0 Benfica 2 until the end of the overnight Portugese Primeira Liga action.

Samaris came on as a 19th minute replacement for former Olympiakos teammate Fejsa.
