3-0 end result and that's all Greek sides out of Europe...

Nobody could have ever told me that Aris would've been the last side standing! A big bravo to them as they eliminated Atletico Madrid, becoming the first Greek side to win a European game v. a Spanish side on Spanish soil. :)

Aris were brilliant in every game they played, except yesterday where they looked like rabbits caught in head lights. These are the facts: If Lazaridis just let the ball go it would have rolled through to the keeper, alternatively he could have headed it back into midfield. Instead he tried to control the ball and gifted them a goal within a few minutes. That got the panic alarms going and before you know it it's 2-0 and Aris are out. The third was a lucky deflection but you get the feeling that Man City could have scored as many as they liked.

We must consider why Greek teams always get battered in England. We play equally strong teams in Spain and Italy and do well, yet in England we get torn apart near enough every single time. This is because of some fairly obvious reasons in my opinion. English teams play at a high tempo while combining it with many high balls and fantastic athleticism, something Greek teams just can't deal with.

One of the biggest factors in stunting the development of Greek football is the quality of the pitches. The grass is too long, too dry, bobbly and patchy. That slows the tempo down, enables teams to get away with mediocre long passes and prevents the development of a passing game. If anyone has a chance to watch this Aris game again look at how Aris struggled with the pace of the pitch, the aerial balls and the athleticism of Man City. This has to be addressed by clubs. They need to employ better quality turf, keep it watered, well managed and quick. That will enable the development of teams that are able to play at a higher tempo. That will spell the end of players like Ronaldo Guiaro who is 37 and would not be able to cope on that sort of pitch, we all saw that in this game, and hopefully also promote youth as a result.

In terms of Aris' immediate needs, it's clear they need to replace Calvo, Javito and get a centre forward. Bobadila is complete rubbish and in my opinion Calvo and Javito were their best players, losing them and not replacing them is unaccaptable. The Japanese player they've brought in is also not good enough for them.
