Fox Soccer & Setanta

Recommended Posts

Interesting discussion going on here, which I have been following for the past week.

According to the latest info, it appears as though Setanta Sports US is on its last legs. Fox has been sub-licensing CL, EPL & FA Cup matches to Setanta but those will be gone as of March 1, 2010. The content has been pulled by Fox due to non payment by Setanta and now it appears that Fox will be launching a new soccer channel on March 1 called Fox Soccer Plus. It will air EPL, Champions League, FA Cup as well as Serie A matches.

Fox Soccer Plus Scheduled To Launch March 1

Setanta Sports Canada is not affected as Rogers Media own majority control (66%) of this channel and Setanta is a minority partner. Also the rights to EPL & CL are also owned by Rogers. At best, the only difference viewers up here will notice is a possible name change, although a cheaper price would be nice ($15 bucks is a little steep).

Setanta set to fold in US

Setanta Sports has confirmed that it plans to cease broadcasting in the US at the end of February and sell select programming rights, including those to many premium football and rugby events, to Fox Soccer Channel.

Setanta Sports will also cease broadcasting its channel in the Caribbean but continue to operate elsewhere, notably in Canada under the joint ownership of the Setanta Group and Rogers Communications.
