Toumba Stadium is part of the 2004 Olympics, and will be used as a training facility by the soccer teams that will play in Thessaloniki. Because of that the are plans for some rennovations at Toumba. Those rennovations were supposed to happen sevral months ago, but until now the work has not started. It is reported that work should start at Toumba any day now. Originally the work was supposed to be completed by May, 2004.

Here are the improvements planned for Toumba Stadium. As with anything in Greece, it is not 100% sure that these will happen:

1. The original roof covering Gate 1, will be removed, and a new one will be built over that gate. The old roof was originally planned to be moved to Gates 5 & 6, but it is not sure that this will happen now.

2. New, 4-story building, which will house VIP suites, lounge, media areas, and new club offices will be build behind Gates 1 &2.

3. The overall appearance of the stadium will be improved. This includes work to be done on all the gates as well as the ground area.

4. The appearance in the area around the stadium will also be improved, which will include new parking facilities. There is also a possibility that a fence surrounding the stadium will be build.

BTW, I heard today that the people that re-constructed the Kalamaria Stadium will also be involved in the improvments at Toumba. I don't know if you saw any pictures of Kalamaria Stadium, but it looks like nothing has been done to it. All you have to do is look at the pitch during the Aris - Olympiakos game. I hope that the construction company actually does some work on Toumba, as opposed to just pocketing the money.

I guess this delays the possibility of a new PAOK Stadium for a decade or two at least. Not bad the PAOK Stadium. Cozy and surely a good home to the norhtern team once more after the renovations. But new stadiums have nothing to do with refurbishing an old one. Leoforos was refurbished and rizoupoli also, despite naturally the PAOK Stadium job expected to be 5 classes above the aforementioned examples those examples reamin dumps bahind the fancy cover.

On top of that, building on Ancient concrete in an Earthquake infested land is not the wisest thing to do.

Anyway, all improvements are welcome in the general immage of misery our Stadium Situation gives. All the best for the renovated 'TOUMBA'.

Well, the news obout the future of Toumba Stadium have to do with a plan by the present majority shareholders of the team Pagonis-Goumenos. Their plan is to demolish the existing stadium, and build a new modern stadium, which will accomodate between 32,000 - 35,000 fans. The new facility will also included shops and restaurants as well as VIP suites.

According to the plan, the current stadium would be used until the 2004-05 season, following which it would be demolished. The new stradium replacing Toumba would be built by 2006. During the construction phase, PAOK will use Kaftanzoglio Stadium for their home games.

Additionaly, the new owners are also planning on starting work on a new training athletic center, which will be located at Peristera. This location has been specifically requested by the PAOK coach, Aggelos Anastasiadis.

In recent days there were some details emerging on what is being done to Toumba Stadium as part of the 2004 Olympics facelifts. This mostly concerns the 5-story building that is being constructed behind gates 1, 2 & 3:

- The underground level is being re-inforced in order to support the 5 story building that is being constructed.

- The ground level of the building will include the home team, visiting team, as well as game officials's dressing rooms. This level will also include rooms for visiting VIPs, and press. This section will also provide access for people with handicaps.

- The 1st floor of the building will include a banquet hall for VIPs, toilets, as well as offices for PAE PAOK.

- The 2nd level will include rooms used for press conferences, space for the press people, toilets, as well as space reserved for PAE PAOK.

- The 3rd level will include 12 suites, bars, toilets, as well as a television studio and space reserved for press.

- The 4th level will include 14 broadcast booths, as well as space reserved for radio/TV broadcast personel. This area will also include seating for 800 press people to watch the game.

- Finally the 5th level is the metal roof that will cover the seats in gates 1,2, & 3.

Awesome news.

Anything they do with that place will be an improvement. To hear that they'll be going through with many of the above mentioned plans makes me enthused for the future.

Perhaps PAOK are finally getting out of the doldrums after all.

Some news about the Toumba construction.

Now that the PAOK - AEK game is history, the roof over gates 1,2, & 3 is being disassembled. This means that the affected gates will be closed for PAOK's next game, which is against Ionikos.

PAE PAOK hopes that all construction goes as planned, and that gates 1,2, & 3 will be temporarily re-opened for the game against Panathinaikos, this time without the roof.

The roof covering the gates 1,2, & 3 of Toumba stadium does not exist anymore. It was taken down as part of the Athens 2004 work. This is the infamous roof, which was supported by posts that obstructed the television viewers the clear view of the field. The old roof was supposed to be transfered to gates 4 & 5, but the Olympic Organizing committee did not approve funding for this, and it will not happen.

Gates 1,2, & 3 will be covered by a new roof. Work is supposed to be completed by July 2004.
