The Columbus Crew on Wednesday signed Argentine striker Guillermo Barros Schelotto to a two-year contract.

Financial terms were not disclosed for Schelotto, who joined the Crew from Boca Juniors.

The 33-year-old joined Boca in 1997 from Gimnasia La Plata and quickly established himself as a crowd favorite

Schelotto's advancing years has resulted in less playing-time recently, however, but his signing represents another coup for Major League Soccer.

"It establishes credibility, it raises our profile in the international soccer market to have a player of this calibre to come to our club - and be interested in coming to our club," Crew general manager Mark McCullers said.

"So it accomplishes all of those things, and obviously competitively it provides us with one of the top players in the world, certainly in Argentinian football."

Schelotto's moves to the MLS at an exciting time.

Former England captain David Beckham has agreed to join the Los Angeles Galaxy from Real Madrid while on Tuesday Colombian forward Juan Pablo Angel left Aston Villa for the New York Red Bulls.
