  1. I really hope in this game we play Alexandropoulos. It’s time for him to play, as he deserves it. Since we are not going to the World Cup and we have chance to give other players a shot, I would do this:

    Athanasiadis

    Saliakas Goutas Mitoglou Tsimikas (c)

    Alexandropoulos Mantalos

    Pelkas Pavlidis Tzolis

    Douvikas

I liked what I saw from Pavlidis as a second striker in the friendlies. He had good energy and played some nice passes. Should give Saliakas a chance to see what he’s got. Goutas was great against Spain. Would like to see Mitoglou. Tsimikas should be captain.

Start attacking them and give the home crowd a show. That’s if anyone will be there.

Yes in theory if you don't make a tournament you should change coaches but what happens when your team is in a rebuild? After 2012 when we lost our guys we had to transition into a rebuild but the coaches we had still didn't go that route and tried to hang on to the guys that were left without brining in the youth to start the transitioning them into the national team. That has put us into the position we are in now. I don't think any coach would have got us into a tournament yet in my opinion. Guys after 20012 the team was in shambles.. I'm all for brining in a new reputable coach but don't think for a second all of a sudden our midfield problems are going to go a way or all of a sudden we are going to find a striker that continuously scores. You can argue that we should have made second in this group and maybe you are right but you guys cant tell me we are a better team then Spain or Sweden.. We played Sweden good but overall they are a better team then us so we finished in 3rd which was expected as we were the 3rd best team in the group on paper. We should have got max points from Kosovo and Georgia but Georgia just beat Sweden 2-0 and it took a very late goal for Spain to beat Georgia so take from that what you will. We will always struggle to break down weaker teams that park the bus i don't think that will change right away as back in our good days we were barley getting 1-0 wins and a lot of draws. Regardless i don't think it was all bad with JVS i think he did some good things, I'm just worried that we replace him with a coach that wants us to play a more defensive style of play. Remember JVS came in here and was preaching to play offence and pressing and when it worked it looked good when it didn't work we looked bad but i think that takes time.

I see what your saying. Greece is not better than Spain and Sweden. But player wise they are better than Kosovo and Georgia and there is no excuse for not putting them way. We played horrible in those games. That’s on the coach for me. We seemed like we didn’t care enough in those games and it cost us. We also failed in the nations league before this campaign. Clearly since then JVS hasn’t learned what’s worked and what hasn’t. I really liked what he did in the beginning as we looked like a positive and attacking team with new young players. Since then our performances have been really inconsistent and we’ve lost our ways.

Playing Bakasetas has hurt us in my opinion. The only decent game he’s played was against Sweden when he scored. Apart from that he’s been garbage in my opinion. So he’s had a lot of time to correct his mistakes and fails to learn from them.

I say if a coach like Valverde was to come in and build the team around the expirienced players like Manolas, Siovas and Fortounis and have the best young players who are playing around them to build towards the Euros. Players who have played and play Champions league or Europa should be the core and then players like Tzolis, Douvikas, Alexandropoulos and Galanopoulos should be the ones that should be trusted and will gain loads of experience if they start and get games nearly all the time. Players like Bakasetas, Siopis, Bakakis and Tzavellas have had there time and it’s time to move on and let players like Alexandropoulos, Goutas and Tzolis get more starts and chances.

  3. The way it should be is if the team doesn’t make a major tournament then you find a different coach. We should be employing different coaches every time, until we reach a tournament. Then you stick with that coach. Can’t be continuing on with someone that can’t get the job done. It’s that simple.

There are rumours that we are looking at Valverde. Hopefully it’s true. EPO need to wake up and stop bringing in low level coaches as it wastes money and time. They need to bring in someone that is of higher quality.

  4. Apparently we are looking to get Valverde in as coach. I don’t know if we have the funds for him but if we do I would sack JVS tomorrow.

He failed as soon as he put Tsimikas at LCB. You can’t put your best attacking player at CB. Why not put Mitoglou in there? Goutas looked fine at the back and Mitoglou would’ve looked the same in my opinion.

I don’t really blame JVS for us not having the ball enough because some of our players are not top quality. Mantalos has a bad touch, Bouchalakis is too slow to make things happen and Siopis runs around but gets no where. Androutsos has a great touch, maybe if he played in his natural position which is midfield then we might’ve looked a little better.

Spain have too much quality and it looked easy for them but I got annoyed at the many times these Spaniards were playing dirty and wasting time. You can keep the ball all you want but if you don’t score, you will not win. They got a lucky penalty.

The whole Siovas thing was overblown by JVS he simply said in regards to Svarnas at the time that he would benefit from having experienced & high end players like Manolas & Sokratis to guide him. Guys who have been playing in CL football and at World Cups and European Championships. I don’t see what was so bad about Siovas comment?

Our CBs have been good for most games but we saw the silly mistakes you can’t make at Wcup qualifying especially vs a good side like Sweden and it just took all the steam out of the Ethniki. As for the 1-1 game vs Georgia JVS can not put Mavrias on the field a guy who doesn’t even get game time in the Cypriot league and we saw how he got exposed on the goal. The game in Kosovo at the end we conceded a silly goal but I really won’t put all blame on the defenders but JVS should have gone out and attacked Kosovo instead of sitting back and inviting pressure for the whole 2nd half and they got a goal in the 92nd. That result was totally on him. Greece should have come out in the 2nd half up 1 nil and put the game out of reach but his stupid subs and tactics cost us 2 points there that we desperately needed.

I agree. Siovas didn’t really say anything bad. He just pointed out the obvious. If we are going to be playing LBs at CB then I’m all for Siovas to come back. Mavropanos has been scoring lately and it seems he should be a CM. The level from Manolas and Sokratis to our other CBs is really low. We might aswell try and convince them to come back because I don’t really see a CB or 2 that is playing at the highest level. Apart from Mavropanos who might get a position change. You never know.

The reason why we’ve been conceding is because our CBs are not truly CBs. Think about it. Hatzidiakos started off as a midfielder in his early days. Tzavellas was a LB. These are the guys we are playing there. They’ve done well but they aren’t going to get us over the line. We might aswell bring Manolas and Sokratis back to guide a Mavropanos or Hatzidiakos…

Alexandropoulos will be great in the NT midfield for years. He had a solid game in PAO win today. Why didn't JVS give him some game time in the last 2 matches?

Dean do you think JVS should stay on after the last 2 qualifiers? I think he should go unless he somehow gets us to the playoff. I think we have reached our ceiling with him. I had no problem when EPO hired him and he has gotten us some good results vs Sweden, Spain and Belgium but its those dropped points vs Georgia and Kosovo that are going to bite us in the arse. I thought he would learn from the NL campaign and that we would get the max points against them. Also I am disappointed with his handling of Manolas, Siovas and Sokratis. Manolas for sure had to be on the NT going into qualifying if he was in the lineup I doubt we drop points vs the minnows and he would have helped us greatly in Sweden but JVS decides to throw Mavrias in the game vs Georgia and he cost us big time! Those 4 points we dropped are going to loom large at the end of this qualification. Very frustrating that we will most likely miss another major tournament..

I agree with everything your saying. In my opinion he should leave. Again I appreciate him bringing in the youth but his stubbornness of playing Bakasetas all the time has hurt us. He is a guy who has almost every time killed our attacks, it’s not good enough. Those points we dropped against Georgia and especially Kosovo tells me we are not qualifying. He hasn’t learned from the nations league and he has been a big disappointment as coach. We need someone who understands Greek football and the Greek players. Someone who knows what works and what doesn’t.

Regarding Alexandropoulos, I always praise him, he’s the total package. I’m an Olympiakos fan and I see a lot of talent in him.

  7. I was actually a fan of Samaris but over the years he has been disappointing, especially for the Ethniki. I don’t know if there is a major gap between him and Bouchalakis. Like have we improved with Bouchalakis over him? Hard to tell in some cases yes but most cases no I think. CM I is still a problem area in my opinion. I look at someone like Alexandropoulos who’s got it all and who I think is better than both but not given a chance even in friendlies.

  8. If I was to pick a team and choose the best players for each position, this is what I would do:

    Vlachodimos

    Masouras Manolas Mavropanos Tsimikas

    Alexandropoulos Galanopoulos

    Masouras Fetfatzidis Tzolis

    Douvikas

Subs/Reserves: Retsos, Ninis, Bouchalakis, Hatzidiakos, Athanasiadis, Tzolakis, Androutsos, Fortounis, Pelkas, Giannoulis, Limnios, Pavlidis, Fountas

Someone very underrated is Giannis Masouras. Had a great season in Poland. Don’t know why he never got picked. Douvikas I think is our best striker.

In total we have 3 keepers, 3RBs(Retsos and Androutsos can fill in there), 4 CBs, 2LBs, 3DMs, 1CM (Ninis), 3CAMs, 3 wingers and 3 strikers. A great balance. In my starting 11 JVS would start 4 of those players.

    Sorry i disagree.

we do not have the luxury of not having even one of our top players not being on the field.

like Manolas.  No better center back in greece.

Skibbe was a better coach than this one.

We need a new coach who can handle all personalities .

I agree 100%. If we want the best for the team then we need to play the best players possible. I’m sick of past coaches playing limited players. Santos did it with Vyntra and Katsouranis. Skibbe did it with Tziolis and Tzavellas and now JVS is doing it with Bakasetas and Stafylidis. I don’t think Skibbe is better. They are propably level. But I appreciate JVS in trusting some of our youth. I have mixed feelings. I don’t know if he should stay or go. If he goes then we’ll propably get someone similar to him. If he stays then who knows what will happen. Will he learn from his mistakes? He didn’t learn from the nations league.

  10. Spot on Alphonse. In the beginning when he took over we looked good and even in the first half of today’s game we looked great. But like many have said he hasn’t learned from his mistakes and his in game management is poor. He has to evaluate our players better also. For me the fascination with Stafylidis and Bakasetas has to stop. He has chosen these guys as his captains and I don’t know why.

Things have to change and I don’t know if he is capable of changing. He seems very stubborn with his decisions where he should try and work things out with our best players and integrate them into the team.

  11. I’m just saying currently, a few players shouldn’t be there from the beginning like Bakasetas and Tzavellas and a few shouldn’t be starting like Bouchalakis and Giannoulis. The players I mentioned have had better from than others and most if not all are more talented footballers. Don’t get me wrong he has put in some good young players in but when you have a few obvious players that shouldn’t be there it handicaps the team from being at its best.

And who per chance are those best players who didn't play?

Fortounis in his natural position, Manolas, Sokratis, Siovas, Fetfa, Ninis, Gianniotas, Fountas, Goutas, Kitsiou, Giannis Masouras and Kotsiras. Also Tzolis should be playing more instead of 5-10 minutes. Where’s Vasiliadis?? Tried so hard to get him. Alexandropoulos is our best CM in my opinion and doesn’t play. These are the players that should’ve been given first priority instead of Bakasetas, Tzavellas, Stafylidis, Poungouras, Bakakis and so on.

Am I happy we won yes, did we deserve it no way in hell. We didn’t really offer much going forward. Masouras and Pavlidis didn’t link up well at all. This 3-4-3 doesn’t work with the players he decides to deploy in it. I lost count of how many times we’d regain possession to only have 2 players past half and no options for transitioning to attack. Tzolis needs to start plain and simple especially against teams like Georgia who sit back he has the skill needed to score a goal on a solo effort.

I agree with you. I am happy for the win but we need improvement still. Our movement needs work. So many times I saw our players just standing there and not busting there ass to move into space and collect the ball…

If he wants to play these type of formations he needs to deploy the right players for it. After 35 games Bakasetas is finally showing that he can be somewhat decent in possession. Is he our best for the role he plays? I still think he isn’t but he’s stepped up and showing some improvement.

I believe we were so lucky that we got the penalty. We looked confused in possession still but we got the 3 points and that’s what matters at the end of the day. Thankfully Pelkas scored. I agree Tzolis and Douvikas should start next game.

Seems Zeca has suffered a serious knee injury over the weekend that will rule him out long term. He would have started these 2 games for sure, so it's a blow. Expect Siopis to start in his place. Remains to be seen if JVS calls anyone up to replace him.

I would rather see Alexandropoulos start. He is the future and the now for me. He can do it all. His age shouldn’t matter. I would also put Siopis next to him.

How can you guys call fountas out best striker and finisher? He’s 26 and has never scored an international goal. That’s absurd.

For club he is. If you look at his statistics over the past couple of seasons he is our best. At international level most of our midfielders can’t cope and our strikers are left with little to no service.

Athanasiadis wouldn't have started but does deserve consideration.

Giakoumakis played his first game today in months.

I do agree Fountas deserved it over Stafylidis.

Why does not playing matter to this coach? He has called up Mavrias and Limnios in the past who weren’t playing for a while and still called them and actually played them. He’s also played Tsimikas, but he should be called regardless if he plays or not as he’s our best LB.

Giakoumakis off the bench wouldn’t be so bad. Especially if we need to score late in the game. Fountas who is probably our best striker/finisher got left out. On top of that he has skill and speed to add to it.

  17. Fountas or Giakoumakis should’ve been called. Both are our best in front of goal and the numbers they have done in the past speak for themselves. Doesn’t make sense to call Stafylidis as we have way better LBs now and he isn’t a CB. There shouldn’t have to be 4-5 LBs in this team.

Athanasiadis deserves to be here. He has been doing very well for a long time and was man of the match against Real Madrid. He’s been impressive. Kolovos also seems to be inform aswell.

I’m hoping we see the old Limnios because he can be dangerous for us when he’s playing well and Masouras is in the best form he’s ever been.
