When all is said and done I wonder what the mortality rate difference will be between them and us.

Mortality rates can be fudged or inconclusive - dependent on how the reporting goes.

From the BBC, Belgium, with a population of 11.5 million, has seen 82 people in every 100,000 die during its coronavirus outbreak while the US, with a population of around 330 million, has seen nearly 30 people in every 100,000 die.

One of the problems with comparing countries is that many of them report deaths in different ways. Belgium, for instance, includes deaths where coronavirus was suspected of being present but was never confirmed with a test. Some US states record deaths this way, but not all.

    As for Brazil...

  2. 80,000 + souls perished in the USA as of May 11, 2020. The Trump propaganda machine is bragging about the 'wonderful job' they have done in testing and how the US stands alone among nations as the best response ever.

    What a bunch of horseshit!

  3. Sponsored by the Lincoln Project, an anti-Trump super PAC that George T. Conway III (prominent attorney and husband of White House counselor Kellyanne Conway) co-founded with other Republicans and former ones. The video, released Monday, May 5, 2020, lays responsibility squarely at Trump’s doorstep for the severity of the ongoing coronavirus outbreak, including the deaths and economic damage.

Lazarus, since our states are in this grand coalition perhaps we'll be celebrating with some nice beers at the same time!

I'm looking forward to that celebration - which I fear is a long-long time ahead into the future! But let's stay hopeful.  Them nice beers are so welcome!

If I was in charge, I'd wait until death rates and infection rates were the same as New Zealand before going down that route.

Unfortunately, both of our countries don't have reasonable people in charge. Maybe some countries are luckier (or smarter) than others when it comes to leadership.

  5. Sadly, the US, as of today, has 65,069 deaths. Trump continues his propaganda and deaths mount with no end in sight. Republicans in government are pressuring local leaders to open up the country and drop social distancing measures. Without following the guidance of scientists and health workers - the US has a low percentage of testing per capita, no infrastructure for contact tracing - and yet they are gun-ho to open up barber shops and nail salons.

With so many people dying, it's not even a good time to be an undertaker. Too many bodies are rotting in parking lot freezer trucks.

Total disregard for human life in the name of power and money! This will perpetuate the situation and keep the economy in a permanent slump. According to Forbes magazine: "This pandemic has put the U.S. economy in the ICU unit. It’s worse than the euro zone. Worse than China’s. Nearly all of it was self-inflicted."

Pssst hey voters, try not to forget what's about to happen to you come election time, mmkay?

Today, the U.S. reported more than 2,070 deaths, a new daily high.

In Pennsylvania, Pa. House of Representatives votes to override Gov. Tom Wolf’s coronavirus business-closure order.  The bill, Senate Bill 613, was Republican-supported, and the measure will now go to the Republican-controlled Senate.

Republicans are doing everything in their power to fuck things up!

  7. Trump propaganda says 65,000+ souls without specifying forecast models. Other previous estimates mentioned up to 250,000 souls.

Evaluating things from the perspective of constant lies fed through the Trump administration, my personal estimate is that Americans should brace for deaths to exceed 250,000 within the next 6-9 months.

And that, I should admit, is my optimistic side talking! ?

That being said, I am also optimistic, that the science world will come up with some form of treatment during the next 9 months. Hopefully, that might mitigate the number of people dying because of the virus. But that is just hope and wishful thinking, not a forecast.

  8. Chris, I'm sorry to hear that you and your fellow British citizens are paying the price for such indifference from conservative politicians  to the value of human life. We are paying a similar price on our side of the pond.

While the situation in the state where I live is not as bad yet, we certainly expect it to get worse. In Pennsylvania we have 11,500 cases with a death toll of 150. New York State is reeling!

The USA is going to buckle as a result of this pandemic, as is the rest of the world. All I can say is hang in there  and take care of yourselves and families. It is going to be a while before life resembles anything close to what we've come to know as normal.

    Stay safe, stay healthy!

  9. Here in Pennsylvania, to date, there are 35 presumptive positive cases and 6 confirmed cases of COVID-19. Total cases = 41. Of course that's going to skyrocket when they actually do some testing (how ridiculous -tragic for that matter!).

Schools are closed, some supermarkets limit store hours, the Department of Transportation suspends issuing photo IDs. And that's just the beginning.

t's not a lot compared to his salary, but still a very nice gesture

Great gesture from Giannis! Very thoughtful and compassionate.

Makes you kind of wonder what the billionaire club owners are doing - or not doing as seems the case. That's the sad state of capitalism in the USA - it's about how it is implemented.

  11. On  June 24, Monday night in front of an audience, John Lithgow, Annette Bening, Kevin Kline, Kyra Sedgwick, Alyssa Milano, Michael Shannon, Alfre Woodard, Joel Grey and more took the stage at New York’s Riverside Church for a live reading of “The Investigation: A Search for the Truth in Ten Acts.”

The 10 acts of the play each had a title corresponding to an act of possible obstruction committed by Trump.
