FIFA World Ranking

Ausgreek Bang On! The only change I would make is Gianniotis from Atromitos on the bench instead of Kapino. Kapino not even playing at Oly no point to even have him on the bench. When he starts playing then he can be called up again. As far as starter goes it has to be Anestis, Karnezis getting no playing time.

Gianniotis it is then Maka!! There is plenty of talent and experience in this Pirates squad. Deano says Siopis is more an 8, so even better for squad balance.

I don't think you guys understand how the rankings work lol

I fully understand that this is an imperfcet science and the current objective formula that FIFA uses for their rankings.

There are so many factors in play here that any formula would have holes in it.

All I am saying is that quite obviously, despite the rankings, there are many teams in front of us that we are superior than.

I actually didn't Arg, I kept it at 23 players, CB, RB and LB as back ups. Out of ten people, seven would probably pick still KPaps over Retsos for now, that could change in the future. If I added Retsos, I would leave out KPaps, squad balance.

I struggled but still picked Toro.

Hey Boxo, you picked six CB's and Lyko is more a LB as is Koutris, it would be out of them for that side perhaps. Mpakakis would stand alone for RB back up then. Good squad though man.

i have said before the only reason why i pick 5-6 cbs is because in my books we're better with 3 cbs on defence. that system will hide our weakness in the wings.

I would take KPap over him atm as well, but Retsos makes the squad every time, not only because he is good enough, but he is our brightest young player, a future leader on the NT, and he can play RB pretty well too. Besides, he's already better than Siopis at CB, and a case can be made over Lyko and Bakakis at RB (Skibbe seems to think so at least). Bottom line, Retsos is on this team every time.

Portugal would have never been champion if they wouldnt have played "like they are 103rd". Obviously, a nobody of a "coach" still understands the game better than Santos (and yes, the Santos bashing continues, even in 2018 and after two unsuccessful qualifications).

So Interesting WC draw. Always painful looking at from the outside.

A: Russia, Uruguay, Egypt, Saudi Arabia

B: Portugal, Spain, Morocco, Iran

C: France, Denmark, Peru, Australia

D: Argentina, Croatia, Iceland, Nigeria

E: Brazil, Switzerland, Serbia, Costa Rica

F: Germany, Mexico, Sweden, Korea Republic

G: Belgium, England, Panama, Tunisia

H: Poland, Colombia, Senegal, Japan

Groups are a bit more diluted compared to Euros, especially seeing some big guns miss out. Most groups are very open.

Ya it sucks having watched it and not being there hurts. There are some really open groups, how could Greece not have beaten Croatia, thinking to myself that we could have landed in Group A and done damage. What a waste.. England again get another layup drawing Panama (worst team tournament) and Tunisia. What a joke.

yeah world cup tries to make it more of a mix rather than simply the best teams out there. If it was the best 32 teams I'd wager 25 would be from europe 5 from south america and the last 2 spots up for grabs.

netherlands, italy, turkey, greece, wales should all be there.

edit: that was knee jerk post 25 from europe might be on the high end lol.

Should be more teams from Europe there...now we get to watch Saudis, iran,Tunisia, Morroco and Panama a horrible side. This is no where near the quality of watching the Euros when it was a 16 team format.

btw

i hope skibbe realizes how important our next friendy games will be for our ranking. we are one of the best teams that was left our of the wc so it's quite certain we will play against wc teams that are sitting above us in the rankings. if we put out some good performances while they will be trying things for the wc we have a great chance to improve our ranking.

yes integrate new players like hatzidiakos and charisis, refresh the squad and kick the κλικα out but these games are important for our future placement in the qualifying draws. same goes for the nations league which is much more important.

There was no topic for The National Football team of Cyprus. Now there is.

SKIBBE SET FOR BIG DECISIONS AHEAD OF BOSNIA MATCH

The Greek National Team’s crucial match against Bosnia and Herzegovina in European Qualifying for the 2018 FIFA World Cup is fast approaching. The away qualifier, to be played at the Bilino Polje Stadium in Zenica on June 9th, is a vital match that could go a long way in determining Greece’s chances for a place at Russia 2018.
In the coming weeks, Ethniki boss Michael Skibbe will announce the squad for that crucial qualifier. And Skibbe will have some big decisions to make as five players will miss the match against the Bosnians. Andreas Samaris, Giorgos Tzavellas, Kyriakos Papadopoulos, and Panagiotis Tachtsidis are all ruled out due to suspension, with Samaris having accumulated yellows while Tzavellas and Tachtsidis were both sent off in the team’s last qualifier against Belgium. Kyriakos Papadopoulos will be serving his final match suspension for his actions against Bosnia in Greece.
Also absent from the team will be long-term injury victim Nikos Karelis.
Skibbe is widely reported to be interested in calling up left-back Babis Lykogiannis for the first time. The Sturm Graz player has impressed with his performances as of late putting himself in the frame for a call-up to the senior team after having represented Greece at youth level.
Another player to have represented Greece’s younger national teams is also in line for a first call-up. Panathinaikos’ Dimitris Kourbelis could be selected as a back-up defensive midfielder.
It’s a big question whether Skibbe will call up Kourbelis and also keep faith in the young talent that were drafted into the squad recently. The smart money is that the German manager will hold onto the likes of Thanasis Androutsos and bring in Kourbelis and Giorgos Manthatis. It wouldn’t exactly be called a youth revolution, however it would a clear sign that Skibbe values what young Greek talent can bring to the table.
Goalkeeper Orestis Karnezis is set for a return to the team meaning that more than likely Dimitris Kyriakidis will be dropped from the squad.
There could be some more surprises depending on injuries, however for now the squad is expected comprise of the players that were selected for the Belgium match.
Below is the predicted squad for the match against Bosnia:
Goalkeepers: Orestis Karnezis, Stefanos Kapino, Panagiotis Glykos
Defenders: Kostas Manolas, Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Vasilis Torosidis, Marios Oikonomou, Kostas Stafylidis, Babis Lykogiannis
Midfielders: Zeca, Manolis Siopis, Kostas Fortounis, Giannis Maniatis, Petros Mantalos, Alexandros Tziolis, Thanasis Androutsos, Dimitris Kourbelis
Forwards: Kostas Mitroglou, Giorgos Manthatis, Dimitris Diamantakos, Apostolos Vellios, Giannis Gianniotas, Tasos Bakasetas

Brazil became the first country to qualify for this event after their 3-0 win over Paraguay. Uruguay and Argentina could go in front of them if they win everything and Brazil loses everything, but as they will face eachother one of them will fail to qualify directly (#5 will play a play-off).

I believe this match will make or break Michael Skibbe's managerial career.
it has a feel of 7 June 2003, Spain v Greece. Michael Skibbe has two or three uncapped youngsters from the Olympiacos system plus Mystakidis fom PAOK whom could mix in well with the tough & experienced campaigners of Karnezis, Sokratis, Manolas, Torosidis, Tzavellas, Samaris, Fortounis, Mitroglou & maybe a few others whom have been around the squad for quite a while to create the right formula to cause a upset away to Belgium.
My prediction is Belgium 1 Greece 1.

This will probably be the biggest match of the campaign. We can put ourselves in a great position to go to Russia with a win here.

Friendly for the ethniki at home to Belarus in Piraeus at Karaiskaki. Good warmup for the bigger game 4 days later.

My heart won't be pulled in two directions here. Cyprus looking for their first win at the Bosnians. Of course, last time Kypro went to Bosnian soil, worked out pretty damn well!
    • By Omonoia9
Hooray, no conflicting emotions here. The ethniki are off to Tallinn to visit Estonia. Need to keep the pace with another win.
    • By Greekaroos
Greece's Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup campaign begins with a away match against FIFA's newest member Gibraltar on 6 September 2016 at the Estádio Algarve in Portugal.
    • By Greekaroos
Greece not qualifying for the UEFA Euro 2016 finals tournament in France could work in their favor in qualification for the Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup. The players get a proper off-season break. Complacency will not creep into the squad after being brought back down to earth in Euro 2016 qualifying.
