Maw, things arent looking too bad for us at the moment. We have been meeting every saturday for the last couple of weeks for a kick around, and the boys seem very keen to create history (UTS have never won gold in mens soccer) so theres heaps to look forward too.

On the player front we have lost an excellent player from the eastern games with a collapsed lung, but we have picked up a couple of exchange students, one of them is an unbelievable player. Hopefully we`ll produce it over the week.

Hows ur team looking??

I cant wait, i have 3 essays due the week before, so i`ll be working like a dog, and then go absolutely crazy amongst the xamos that will be newcastle.

because there is no Australian University Games thread :P

our team has lost 2 duds (omitted) and one gun defender (knee).

we have added a former Melbourne Knights player, who is going OS for trials after the semester and is a decent player. Along with 2 decent defenders and a striker, bringing our squad to 18, with 2 of the Adelaide boys as emergencies.

alas that French kid i was shooting my mouth off about wont be joining us cos he is soft!

Our preparation hasnt been too great admitedly, but we have a couple of practise matches, including hitouts against Mlebourne Uni, RMIT and hopefully Swinburne, that tournament and a match against South Mlebourne's youth team. maybe i'll get scouted

there is also rumor that i'll have a gig in Newcastle on the tuesday night at the Mercury. to be confirmed

Sorry for the late replies lads, but we have been working our asses off in order to get our team prepared. Up unitil today we had no strikers we lsot our only out an out overseas, we have lost our sweeper goalkeeper and other than the irrelevant players thats about it. We have recruited some considerable talent to our team especially in the midfield and forward line department with two strikers who have not been playing recently but are hungry to have a hitout again. The defense meanwhile is missing some players and it looks like ill be pulling on the gloves as goalkeeper due to the fact that ours is out with rotator cup injury and our backup cant get the week off work. Alas, no time for a friendly Maw as the boys are all working in order to have sufficient funds for the tournament. I hear Ivo Madeira is coming up with you guys hey Maw? If this is so with Bouios in, and also Boris Fernando and a few others your team will be pretty good. Hopefully itll all fall into place, and if not lets just enjoy it while we are there.

yeah a few new boys in.

bouios is defintely out but ivo and boris are 100%.

we also have an emergeny dude who is a former knights striker (last season, scored 4 NSL goals). he is on stand-by basically to replace one our wingers, who may not be able to come due to work committments.

we played melbourne in a friendly match and won 5-3. we were down 0-3 as we got to the ground very late, had no warm up and they were there 45 mins earlier than us and warming up.

they were taking the piss though, i think they played a much weaker squad than they'll take.

I wont play up our chances as i cant comment until i see the draw.

Thryleon, if you boys want a match then just call me. get my number off bulgo peristeri.

you guys flying up? leave on sunday??

Just got back from our final training session, things are looking ok for us, we have a strong squad, a couple of guys who made the merit list at ecg`s may not get a start this time around.

Our best news is we have a new strip, our uni wouldnt fork out, so we have gone all white, with only a tiny bit of our unis colours (black and green). If they had paid they would have been able to design, but since they didnt, aera to them

We`ll have to organise to meet while we`re up there... maybe take a few photos to post on this site..

Take it easy boys, have a good flight over...

p.s. newcastle uni games team drew with sydney olympic last week... i think they will be very very tough to beat

We are coaching it up. We leave on friday night. I talked to the organisers at my uni and he said it would be a logistical nightmare to plane it up. Oh well s%$#! happens. So far we havent trained together and are ill prepared to take on quality opposition. Up until last week we only had 11 players going up but now we have about 15 and should be okay, managed to sign a goalkeeper, so im back in the defensive line making it a good one with me, 5 years senior squad experience in division 3, a Fitzroy city defender, and one from Bentleigh Greens. Played a friendly against Nunawading (my club) and we beat em 4-1. We are travelling alright now. Will have to see how we go once we get up there. Definately have to organise a phantis reuinion while in Newcastle. See yas up there.

well.

the results are in, the drinkings been done, and the phantis uni games boys met each other on the pitch as well as off it.

firstly, let me state that for a Sydney Olympic and PAO fan, Pao_Sydney is quite a good bloke and Thryleon and i look forward to Portugal travels with the lad.

Again, the uni games suggests that Sport is its number one contention, but socialising and meeting people is definitely also number one! if that makes sence....

The results from the soccer tournament are in, and at least one Phantis boy came away with a medal

But lets summarise the Phantis meetings;

Monash Uni vs Swinburne Uni

These two traditional Melbourne-based rivals met at 9am on day two of the competition having been drawn together in group D. A clear but windy morning greeted both teams

on the very wide Pitch 1. Both teams were eager to continue their decent starts to their respective campaign. The previous day, Swinburne had defeated fancied Wollongong (?) by 1-0 and Monash had ground out a difficult 0-0 draw with the hard working Uni of WA.

Goals were hard to come by on day one of competition (with four 0-0 draws played out on pitch 2 alone), and Monash were eager to break their goal scoring duck as early as possible.

From the kick-off, the skillfull Monash midfield moved the ball through the center of the park without Swinburne nearing the ball. A foul near the corner post gave Monash a free kick, and only 30 seconds past kick-off, the cross resulted in a goal to the baby blue and white's.

From there Monash continued their ascendancy and brave defending from thryleon and the SU goal keeper Ian kept the score respectable. 2-0 at half time, with Monash in complete control.

The second half saw more of the same, and Monash came away with a tidy 3-0 win in a match that really slowed down to walking pace with the result beyond doubt. Swinburne though, could take confidence into the next phase of competition, following a decent showing.

UTS vs Swinburne

Again, two Phantis members met on the pitch and this time, it was the sudden death repechage phase of proceedings which would propel the victorious team into the Quarter Finals.

Pao_Sydney had been used in varying positions throughout the tournament, and his opposite number Thryleon continued to be the rock in defence for Swinburne.

It was a match played ferociously, with numerous chances falling in quick succesion at one stage to a rampant UTS midfield. Not to be outclassed, SU fought back and the scores remained level at half time.

The second half was played out in quick pace but neither midfield could penetrate or break down their opposition successfully.

Deep into the second half of injury, a wayward Thryleon clearance (he blames the goalie) resulted in a devastating golden goal own goal for UTS. The victory was theirs and they had progressed through to the Quarter Finals.....

geez if i spent this much time writing my assignments i'd be doing okay.....

more in the future..

Is that all?? A little bit disappointing, i think i deserved at least a top bloke??

Heheh, good to meet u both, shame we didnt get a photo with the three of us. Thryleon, unlucky bout the "own goal" the pressure was mounting anyway.

Boys if you call that an own goal then most defenders who are trying to clear off the line, score every week. Meanwhile, james you didnt mention that the night before the Swinburne UTS game, i hadnt been to bed. I got back to our rooms just in time to catch the bus to go to the games from that birds house. As far as Pao_Sydney goes, well all i can say is the guy seems like a good bloke, but effectively i was too drunk or tired to recognise otherwise. Meanwhile hard luck to monash and UTS. It was definately fixed in Newcastle's favour, and had that penalty shootout gone differently, then UTS would have done alright. Pao_sydney better luck next time hey?? (YOU KNOW WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT, IT DOESNT NEED TO BE SAID HERE). ;)
