PAOK In Europe 2019-2020

Now that we almost secured the Greek Championship (barring any last minute point deductions) let's look ahead to our participation in the 2019-2020 European competitions.

PAOK will play in the Champions League qualifying rounds via the Champions route. PAOK enters the competition with 23.500, which is a drop in points from previous seasons thanks to our poor European performances in the past two seasons.

PAOK will enter the competition either in 2nd Qualifying Round or 3rd Qualifying Round. It all depends on who wins the current Champions League competition. In order to enter the competition in 3rd Qualifying Round we need the winner of the Champions League to be a team that will also gain a CL group stage spot for next season through their home championship.

As things stand it looks like the only way for us to start in the 2nd Qualifying Round is if Ajax Amsterdam wins the Champions League because Dutch champions don't get a direct spot in the group stage of CL.

In any case PAOK will most likely be unseeded in all the draws in the qualifying rounds.

  • Blackhawk changed the title to PAOK In Europe 2019-2020

If we must enter in Q2 we are only just seeded. We might draw Ivic’s Maccabi. As it is now and with the presumption that the highest seed wins the tie in Q1

Seeded:

Celtic, FC Copenhagen, Dinamo Zagreb, BATE Borisov, FK Astana, Ludogorets, APOEL, Legia Warsaw, PAOK, Qarabag.

Unseeded:

Maribor, Red Star Belgrade, Maccabi Tel Aviv, Sherif Tiraspol, Rosenborg, HJK Helsinki, Dundalk, Dudelange, Skhendia Tetovo, The New Saints.

In Q3 we have the following seeded and unseeded teams:

Seeded: 020, Celtic, FC Copenhagen, Dinamo Zagreb, BATE Borisov, FK Astana

Unseeded: Ludogorets, APOEL, Legia Warsaw, PAOK, Qarabag, Slavia Praha.

For me ideal draws would be Dundalk/TNS and BATE (last as a serious match and not like last season).

Toughest draw: Red Star and 020.

We have pretty much 75% chance of starting the campaign in qualifying round 3. It all depends on Ajax.

The most ideal scenario is for Ajax to win CL and Dutch title. That way we avoid a Dutch team (Ajax or Eidhoven) in the qualifying campaign.

The second ideal scenario is for Barca, Liverpool or Tottenham to win the CL, but then we have the possibility of facing the Dutch champion in the qualifying rounds, which basically means we will not make the group stage of CL for sure. In this scenario we need Tottenham to finish in top 4 of Premier League, which is almost certain as Arsenal shot themselves in the foot over the weekend.

Ajax Amsterdam
Celtic Glasgow
FC Copenhagen
Dinamo Zagreb
Bate Borisov
unknown at present

Liverpool just beat Barcelona. This might be good for us, as I think Liverpool is more beatable for Ajax than Barcelona was...assuming Ajax wins tomorrow (which they should).

Stupid Ajax blows it, conceding a goal in 95th minute.  Unfortunately we will now find them in our path. Let's hope Liverpool beats Tottenham as there is still a chance we might have to start in qualifying round 2 in CL.

Ok. We are 99.9% sure to start in QR3 (August 6,7 / August 13). The 0.01% chance to start in QR2 is for Tottenham to lose in CL final and not finish 4th in Premier League. For that to happen they need to lose to Everton and Arsenal needs to beat Bournmouth and cover the 8 goal deficit, something quite impossible.

In QR3 we will be unseeded are looking to face the following teams:

Ajax or PSV Eindhoven  (HOL)
Celtic Glasgow (SCO) or a team that eliminates them in QR2
FC Copenhagen  (DEN) or a team that eliminates them in QR2
Dinamo Zagreb  (CRO)  or a team that eliminates them in QR2
BATE Borisov  (BLR)  or a team that eliminates them in QR2
Astana (KAZ)  or a team that eliminates them in QR2

So basically a 17% chance that we will definitely not make it (by drawing Ajax/PSV). We should be able to handle any of these other teams. I guess it would be good to draw Dinamo Zagreb if only to help Greece's coefficient by knocking them out...though I'd prefer BATE. They should be the weakest team and we need to get some revenge.

BATE was the weaker team in Europa League as well and was able to eliminate us from the competition.

The good thing is that we will be starting the official games in August, which means we will gave more time to prepare.

It's official following today's results in Premier League. We will start our European campaign in QR3 in August. Also it looks like Ajax clinched the Dutch title, so they might be one of our potential opponents.
