AEK in Greek Cup 2017-18

Recommended Posts

It's been a very successful year so far for AEK and Jimenez...still playing in Europe, in the running for the league title and just knocked out Oly from the cup competiton. More bang for the buck than any other team in Greece and have come up with big game performances as needed. Considering they have lost 2 of their top players (Mantalos & Johansson) to long term injuries they have managed to keep all goals with in reach. Great job so far.....and this is coming from a PAO fan

Agreed. I'm a PAO fan too, but it's nice to see AEK competing at this high level. If we had Ouzounidis when Alafouzos hired Strapacho(ni), we would be kings.

While Oly and PAOK arguably have more depth and talent at the moment Jimenez has  AEK actually performing better  as a "team"....that's the main reason they are still playing in europe and got past Oly in the cup. I think Ouzounides has failed as a coach....he should have done much better in the 1st half of the season when the roster had enough talent to secure points before dismantling the team by the doikisi....can't compare him to Jimenez at all who is on target for every goal so far this season.

Respectfully disagree about Ouzounidis "should have done much better in the 1st half of the season...."

You could say this under normal circumstances, but not under the ones after Alafouzo announced his decision to pull back early in the first half.  The competitive teams work off season to prepare and rely on a stable core of players. PAO and Marinos didn't have that.

If you're a player owed money, you hear that the club may even fall to 3rd div. when big players are sold, or leave or about to leave, well, excuse me, but it's understandable why you don't give 100%.

Even back then, Marinos didn't have a stable unit. It's not like PAO had a deep bench. You start with Berg and Zeca, etc, and then?....

Much of high-competitive game is mental. The other half is internal culture and quality of people. The ..third half is the outside circumstances.... All negative.

Wow a real barn burner today vs AEL who played a great game. Lazaros with the last minute goal to put AEK through to the cup final....a thing of beauty. I think he's probably the league mvp this year considering the number of important goals he's had and overall play.

here's the goal:

How we have not signed him back is incredible. He is something else and lifts the team big time. What a finish! On to the final now with PAOK!

We saved our worst performance of the year for the final.

Horrible display. Though Vranjes, Bakakis, Simoes & Bakasetas were especially bad. Our attack today was very poor, Jimenez when back to Mantalos on the wing which has never worked.

Credit to PAOK deserved the Cup, they were much better today.

Barkas was our best by far, Araujo and Galo the only other two that did well.

Still don't understand why Jimenez would leave his 2 best players on the bench (Gallo and Lazaros) and go with Mantalo/Bakasetas on the wings. He pretty much gave the sidelines up with this strategy and allowed Vieirinha and Matos to dominate. Also AEK were unable to create anything in the middle of the pitch which is where Mantalos (or even Bakasetas) should have been. In general AEK were unable to get it going and Jimenez seemed unwilling to make the necessary changes. He didn't play to his strengths and didn't field his best players and AEK payed the price.

Spot on, very poor tactics. Went all Skibbe and played slower central players on the wing 😩
