Raymond Kopa died today at the age of 85. The son of Polish immigrants (full surname: Kopaszewski) played in the first European Cupfinal with Reims in 1956. Real Madrid won that cup. Kopa joined Real and won the European cup three times with them (1957, 1958 and 1959). After that win he returned to France.

He won the bronze medal with France in the WC 1958.

Tommy Gemmell died yesterday at the age of 73. The Scotsman was one of the socalled "Lisbon Lions" the group of Celtic-players that won the European Cup in 1967 beating Inter Milan with 2-1.

Gemmell was a left back. As far as I know he is the only Scotsman to score in two finals. He scored the equalizer in that match in 1967. In the 1970-final he scored again in the final. This time the opener against Feyenoord, but at the end they lost the game with 2-1 after extra time.

At the age of 68 Enrique Castro Gonzalez died. Most of us will know him as Quini. He was the five time Pichichi of the Primera Division, scored 8 goals in 35 matches for the Spanish National Team (including 1 goal in a friendly against Greece) and the winner in the 1981-1982 final of the UEFA Cup Winners Cup for Barcelona.

He also was a newsitem for being kidnapped for 25 days.

Quini died after a heart attack. Gijon honored him one day after his death with renaming the stadium of Sporting Gijon to Estadio El Molinon Enrique Castro “Quini”.

Yesterday Rob Rensenbrink died at the age of 72 of PMA (Progressive Muscular Atrophy).

He played in two WC finals for The Netherlands in 1974 and 1978. In the latter he scored the 1,000th goal in the history of the WC and almost brought Oranje the cup in the last minute against Argentina in the final but unfortunatelly did hit the post.

2023 did not start well:

After Pelé now Gianluca Vialli passed away. Sad because I liked him a lot and gave his name to the elder of our twins as his second name. His twinbrother has Gianfranco (from Zola) as his second name as both players were like twins too.
