Nerit Slowly Moving Foward; Launching In Early 2014

Recommended Posts

I figured I should make a new thread on NERIT and separate it from discussions on the former ERT.

It looks like things are slowly moving forward for NERIT, the board of directors and president were chosen. (For a term of one year) The goal is to start building NERIT "from scratch" and launch sometime in the beginning of 2014. The new board is also supposed to meet with the EBU next week to get the ball rolling on their membership and any help they can offer in launching NERIT.

I thought this new entity was supposed to launch late September/early October, what is this about 2014 now?!  ;)

I would not be surprised if in the end they scrap this NERIT and just keep this DT as the new entity since its already on the air broadcasting.  I wonder how long it will take them to launch the international channel or whether it will ever launch at all?!

Well according to the latest statements given, it looks like they are now aiming for a March 2014 launch...:

"But the head of Nerit's supervisory board Theodore Fortsakis told AFP that the most likely launch date is March 2014, contradicting initial predictions of a December start.

"We wondered whether we should start with a light programme in January or if we should wait until we are completely ready, which will be towards March and that is what we opted for," he said.

"We want to launch three stations: one that will be cultural and educational, a second one that will be more commercial and a third one, for Greeks abroad.""

Also a big hurdle is that the former ERT headquaters are still being occupied.

"But after the international outcry caused by ERT's June 11 shutdown, the government is well aware that a forceful evacuation could backfire."

One step closer to NERIT.

Riot police removed ERT workers from the headquarters in Agia Paraskevi.

Greek riot police have stormed the headquarters of shuttered public broadcaster ERT, which former employees had been occupying after it was suddenly closed down in June as part of government cost-cutting measures.

Following prosecutors' orders, police entered the building in the early hours of Thursday and removed the former employees inside.

Since the June closure, the former workers, who refused to accept the shutdown, have been broadcasting online from the headquarters. Banners hanging outside the building have been calling for resistance.

Messages urging support for the demonstrators were posted on social media and the website the former employees have been broadcasting from. Some of the posts referred to the storming of the building as an "invasion against democracy."

A government spokesman said the police operation was carried out "to enforce the law and resume legality."

"The building was under illegal occupation, which resulted in daily damage of public property," said the spokesman, Simos Kedikoglou. "And the operations took place in the presence of a prosecutor."

Of course opposition parties denounced the raid, most notably SYRIZA who had 10 MPs try to enter the building. Now SYRIZA is using this to call a vote of no confidence in the Greek government.

Some more movement. The NERIT board has launched a public consultation campaign where citizens can contribute comments on how the new broadcaster should operate. The findings will be compiled in a report and submitted to the board to be considered when putting together the broadcaster. Along with this public consultation call, the board also released a (provisional) logo for the broadcaster:

Also by early December, NERIT is expected to become a full active member of the EBU.

The logo and the name (the acronym specifically) are both horrible IMHO.  They both look rushed, like someone was told to come up with something in a hurry- not very professional IMO.  Why the heck do they need 'internet' as part of the name, it doesn't go and sounds stupid- Nea Elliniki Radiofonia Internet Tileorasi. ;)  I think they should use NERIT as the corporate name and continue to use the ERT brand for the TV and radio services, except create a new logo which would distinguish it from the old ERT..

I completely agree with the comments about the logo. Let's hope that they will come up with some good on screen logos by the time they launch in March.

I also agree that NERIT should be used as the corporate name only, with different names for the TV and radio services. After all, that is how ERT operated as well. The only service that used the ERT name was the international service. I don't think they will re-use any of the old names though, so they can keep the appearance that this is a "new public broadcaster". :gr:

I think the names for the TV channels will be NET & NET2 (or NET DYO).  These are the names that were mentioned a while back when the government first started talking about reforming ERT.  I hope they keep the international radio service name the same- H FONI TIS ELLADAS is a great name for this service and it should be retained IMO.

EDT has finally moved into the former ERT headquarters, and have subsequently launched DT HD as well as three radio stations: DR1, DR2, DR3. Another stepping stone toward NERIT....

Also there is a slight variation of the provisional NERIT logo in this video posted a few days ago.

Some updates:

*EDT has launched live streaming: http://www.hprt.gr/webtv-live and has also brought the historic pubic television (ERT) archives back online: http://www.hprt-archives.gr

*NERIT has launched a "company" website: www.nerit.gr

*According to reports, everything is moving forward still for a March launch. There is a tender out for programing proposals currently, and the board of directors are supposedly looking into names for the stations now.

*On the flip side, SYRIZA came out with a proposal on how they will reinstate ERT if they come to power in any potential elections.

Per new reports, the deadline to fully launch NERIT has been pushed back to around April 25th. Pilot programing and changes will begin in March, but under EDT. NERIT will fully launch by the April deadline. (NERIT has to launch before May due to the elections, and a deal they signed with the EBU regarding their participation and broadcast of the Eurovision Song Contest) As for the channel names and logos, there will be an open call put out to schools and graphic design companies.

There have already been open calls for many things including programing proposals. All the related documents are on http://www.nerit.gr

It appears this past week DT HD has been broadcasting slightly different programing, covering more Winter Olympics programing than DT. I guess that is a good workaround for EDT since they don't have any other channels set up yet, but not so good for fans of the games who can not receive the HD feed.

NERIT is calling on all Greek citizens to submit ideas and suggestions for the naming of their television, radio and internet media services. Starting today until March 20th, anyone can submit their suggestions for the naming of the three planned television channels, six radio stations, and the main website for NERIT. The link to submit ideas is http://www.nerit.gr/proskliseis/p04/

A brief description on each planned station to help with naming:

Television stations:

1st channel: General news, sports, news from Greece and the world

2nd channel: Cultural, Entertainment

3rd channel: Greek diaspora - Satellite

Radio stations:

1st station: General news, Sports

2nd station: Greek music

3rd station: Classical music, art,

4th station: World music

5th station: Greek diaspora

6th station: Foreign citizens living in or visiting Greece

Then there is also the naming for the main website.

If and when these channels are running, which one will be available in the US & Canada?

Mainly on Dish/Rogers/Bell?

I would say the satellite channel is all but certain, and maybe a few radio stations like the diaspora centric one if Dish still finds it worth while to offer.

It appears that the main services will finally launch by the end of April, but the question is if they will also launch the satellite version at the same time, and how long it will take to negotiate the worldwide rights onto the different platforms.

Grk101, I am confused about your description for the first channel- what is 'general news'?!  Did you mean to say general entertainment, sports and news?!  Do they still plan to have one channel operate from Athens and the other from Thessaloniki or will they both be broadcast from Athens?!

I meant more along the lines of general informational, my mistake. Here is the exact description for the channel in Greek: "1

Interesting that they plan on airing sports, I wonder what kind of content they will air and more importantly where will the money come from to pay for the sports content?!

EDT has been using ERT's old rights so far airing the winter Olympics, select UEFA Champions League games, Euroleague and Formula 1. They have also been airing Athlitiki Kyriaki with all the sports highlights. Actually on that note, there was an article this week about releasing funds from ERT to pay for ERT's sports rights that are being used by EDT.

As for future funding, I think the supposed increased transparency is going to be a double sword for them. Even the little information ERT released was always picked apart.

I recall reading that most people in Greece were not too happy about having to pay for ERT via a mandatory fee that was tacked on to their hydro bills- is this practise going to continue or have they figured out another way to fund this service instead of on the backs of the people?!

There has been a fee of 3 Euro tacked onto the electric bill since January. With the 3 Euro fee, they are expecting to collect 191 million Euro this year, of which 101 million Euro is supposed to cover the operation costs of NERIT. The rest is supposed to be primary surplus to the state budget. In comparison, ERT collected a 4.24 Euro fee a month. For 2012, ERT collected 300 million Euro of which 245 million Euro went toward its operation. Of course there are complaints that the fee is being collected already while NERIT is not on air yet.

It sounds like they want to NERIT to be a public broadcaster not a state broadcaster.  In order for that to happen, the whole process has to be overseen by an independent body- is that what is happening or are there people from the goverment involved in the launch of NERIT?!

Well that is the plan I think. If I understand the set up correctly, there are two governing boards to NERIT: A 7 member supervisory board, and a five member board of directors. All their decisions are supposed to be independent of government intervention. EDT on the other hand, is far from independent. That is another reason why they want to launch NERIT by the end of April, because it would be considered unfair to have EDT covering the May elections when the current government has sway in it. Like you said though, it will probably be hard for NERIT to be truly independent.

I would take this with a grain of salt, but the NERIT board has supposedly approved the first 10 television programs that are expected to be up and running by the time the hand off from EDT to NERIT happens in April. They include a music show in the vain of "Stin Ygeia Mas", a game show focusing on knowledge facts, a biopic type series focusing on famous Greeks, a documentary series focusing on Greek abroad, and a documentary on the World Cup. 15 more programs are expected to be approved for a total of 25 television programs. These productions were selected from about 600 proposals that were submitted to NERIT.

Let's see what happens.....

The latest in the NERIT saga is that the transition launch date has been pushed back to May 5th.... Many are doubtful that they will stick to this new date after all the previous delays. The EBU's stance remains to be seen. They had originally set April 27th as the deadline for launch.

They have launched a few new programs through EDT though.

Is this thing ever going to launch, why announce a launch date if you are not go to adhere to it?!  They are better off just giving some vague response like 'summer 2014' instead of attaching a hard date to the launch which makes them look like fools if the thing doesn't launch by the date they announced.  Personally, I don't think this will launch anytime soon, eventually an election will be called and then everything will be on hold until after the election and if Syriza get in then who knows what they will do.  They have the temp channel on the air so they probably are not in too much of a rush to get NERIT launched or so it seems?! ;)

Any news on the naming contest for the channels, it would be interesting to know how many people sent in submissions and whether they have picked the names yet?!

From ERT to NERIT back to a new ERT. I figured this deserved its own new thread.

The latest news is that the new SYRIZA government plans to establish yet another new broadcaster that will replace NERIT. The bill for the new national broadcaster is expected to be submitted to parliament within a month. The new broadcaster will use the ERT acronym, but will not be a continuation of the old ERT. Instead the new ERT is being preliminarily called "Ethniki Radiofonia Tileorasi" instead of the old "Elliniki Radiofonia Tileorasi". Their aim is to build a "new ERT" from scratch, that will not be controlled by the government and will be free of scandalous contracts and spending. They also plan to resume the satellite link to the Greek Diaspora as soon as possible. The fee tacked onto the electricity bills will remain, and former ERT employees will be rehired.

It remains to be seen how the old ERT union will respond when all is said and done. They had been demanding for a 100% re-establishment of the old ERT as it was before it was pulled off the air, and that is what they thought they would get with the new government as soon as it was elected. Meanwhile police have been stationed by the government at the old ERT headquarters following a demonstration by the ERT union.....

I'm not sure what the point is of creating yet another new broadcaster from scratch. It seems like a waste of public funds when they could easily just restructure NERIT and achieve their goals. In fact, aside from rehiring all former employees, this sounds like a rehash of the original NERIT idea, just with hopes of much better execution. I guess their egos won't let them work on something the previous government established and something they vilified since inception......

Starting January 1st, 'NERIT Sports' will be relaunched as 'NERIT plus'. To start off with, it will consist of content from ERT's historical archives. They plan to implement three daily programing blocks:

NERIT Kids will focus on children programing, both foreign and Greek. NERIT Life will be the largest block, focusing on local programing, talk shows, culture centric shows, Greek and foreign historical documentaries, travel and ecological content, tourism centric shows, woman and entertainment centric shows, etc. NERIT Sports will focus on sports programing. You can view the press release and the week's programing at the following link: http://www.typologies.gr/2014/12/31/%CE%BD%CE%AD%CE%BF-%CE%BA%CE%B1%CE%BD%CE%AC%CE%BB%CE%B9-%CE%BC%CE%B5-%CE%B5%CF%80%CE%B1%CE%BD%CE%B1%CE%BB%CE%AE%CF%88%CE%B5%CE%B9%CF%82-%CE%B1%CF%80%CF%8C-%CF%84%CE%B7-%CE%BD%CE%B5%CF%81%CE%B9%CF%84/

This whole launch and press release seem very rushed considering the press release was just issued the night before the launch and there is no logo or programing info on their website yet. Maybe it has to do with the looming upcoming snap elections, and the promise by SYRIZA to bring ERT back?
