Other Greeks Playing Abroad

Yesterday was the 30th (last) round of the Belgian Jupiler Pro League. Here is a short summary of the season of the Greek players playing there:

Marinos started as Charleroi lost to Kortrijk (2-0). His team finished third. He missed only one game in the whole year and gave four assists. He should have been called up to the NT considering that he has been in top form in the last 10 months or so. Kitsiou was in the starting XI of Sint-Truiden as they lost at home (0-1), Goutas came off from the bench, Charisis was not even on the bench. Galitsios signed recently for Mouscron. He played four games in the season, they lost all of those games. This time he was on the bench as they lost to Eupen (4-0). His team finished 14th, they just avoided relegation. Kolovos played 12 games for Mechelen (no assists or goals, does anybody remember how he was considered a white hope for the future?). They finished last and got thus relegated. Koutroubis went recently to Standard Liege. He played four games and they didnt lose any of them. Papazoglou played seven games for Kortrijk and didnt score but on six occasions he played five minutes or even less.

Tsimikas scored one and provided one assist today in Willem II’s 2-2 draw today against FC Twente.

His team is not safe yet but they are 10 points clear from the relegation-spot and six points clear from play-out-games.

Belgian Playoff I results: Charleroi finished sixth (team of Marinos), Standard Liege was second (Koutroubis played 3 games in the playoff and 4 in the league, they won all of these games), Genk finished fifth (Karelis featured six times; 1 assist + zero goal which means his stats in the whole season are 20 games/4 goals/4 assists).

Playoff 2: Kitsiou (36 games, 2 assists), Goutas (21 games, 1 goal) and Charisis (22 games, 1 goal, 2 assists) were in the starting XI in the last round. Kitsiou missed a penalty. Galitsios played 9 times in the last five months (one assist) as Excelsior Mouscron avoided relegation. Papazoglou played 14 games for Kortrijk and scored on one occasion.

Tsimikas scored in the last round in a 2-2 draw against Vitesse Arnhem. His team Willem II finished 13th,  so they didnt get relegated. All in all he played 33 games, scored 3 goals and gave three assists. He had a good season, maybe he should have been called up last time instead of the likes of Nikolaou and Risvanis?

Thanasis Karagounis played 2 games (52 minutes) for Zwolle. He gave even one assist in April against Roda but he will be released at the end of the season.

Kostas Lamprou played 90 minutes for Ajax in a 2-1 away win against Excelsior Rotterdam. This was his sole game in the whole season (and he played 10 times for the U21 team but he is 28). His contract wont be renewed.

What's the story with Odysseas Vlachodimos? He moved to Benfica for next season. Played for Germany U21 recently and was MOTM. Any chance of him still opting for Greece NT?

Vlachodimos has said he'd like to play for Greece, but Skibbe constantly ignores him ?

What do you expect from a guy that says our campaign was successful even though we didn't make it in the WC? Even Manolas went on public and said that since Greece is out, we have failed and anything else is a BS.

Belgium and Croatia making in into the semis is a whole another thing, as it was shown by our games against them, we were not bad and hadn't Skibbe fielded this ridiculous line up in the Zagreb game we could have gone to Athens with a chance to qualify.

Yeah 100%. Vlachodimos looks the stuff for keeper position. I do t tryst Karnezis 100%. I'd rather give the spot to Gianniotis atm.

Manolas also stated something else. He said that we don't have a player in the mold of Basinas, Karagounis or Katsouranis. What he fails to realise is that a player of that type won't do well in the current style of modern football. Back then those players were useful. Not now. We need faster, athletic players in the middle. That's the way it is nowadays.

What a great interview with Manolas.

I just want to see Fetfa back in the lineup. He was good for the NT. Even look at his stats they're pretty impressive, all while being young and playing in a system that did not suit him. Donis will also be big for the NT in the coming campaign.

@Argy yes mate, if we are gona keep up with how it is, these players need to be played in their positions, Skibbe can’t keep playing slow central players on the wings, it’s just killing us with a super slow central midfield of Tziolis too.

Far out hey... Skibbe

Prob good to try his luck abroad... would have liked to seen him on the Greek fields though

Me too. He has potential and we should keep an eye on him. I hope he progresses this season to the point where he could be considered an option on the wing for the national team.

Savvas Mourgos scored the openings goal for FC Dordrecht in the league game against AZ (Alkmaar) B in the second tier in The Netherlands. Mourgos is a former Panionios-player. He moved to the youth academy of Arsenal in 2010 and signed for Norwich City in 2017. He is playing as a loanee right now. For the record: the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
