Christos Kontis

Former Olympiakos Pireas and AEK Athens player and one of the heroes of APOEL's triumph against Wisla Krakow merely a week ago, Christos Kontis (36) has tragically had a heart attack!

Thankfully he's alive, but it is unlikely that he will play football again.

"The 36-year-old, who has featured in 43 UEFA club competition games, played the full 90 minutes of the league encounter but complained of feeling faint after the final whistle, having previously felt chest pains all week. He was taken to hospital in Nicosia where doctors confirmed he had suffered a heart attack and carried out an angioplasty on Tuesday morning, saying his condition had improved but he was unlikely to play again.

Former APOEL player and current board member Takis Antoniou said: "We cannot say too much at this moment. We will need to see what the tests reveal. I hope it is nothing serious. Kontis is very much loved by the entire APOEL community and we all hope that he makes a full and speedy recovery."

APOEL have signed Kaka as Kontis' replacement. Not Real Madrid's Kaka of course :) but Hertha Berlin's. He was on loan at Braga last season.

Such a shame Kontis' career came to an end this way. May he enjoy good health from now on and live great moments while watching APOEL in this year's CL, knowing he helped get the team there with some tremendous defensive displays. :gr:

APOEL also signed last season's Olympiakos keeper, Pardo! Chiotis has been a great servant for the club but has looked a little shakey in the in the Wisla games. Of course that doesn't mean he's finished but this is a very interesting signing
