Season in Review: APOEL

In Part 2 of reviewing notable Cypriot sides and their seasons, we look back on the 2008-2009 season of APOEL. It wasn't looking good for APOEL to start the season. With Anorthosis doing crazy things in Europe and Omonoia making all the big signings, APOEL kept things the same. The biggest difference was in goal. Mixalis Morfis, longtime starter took a back seat to former AEK bust Dionysis Xiotis. Xiotis, trying to revive his career in Cyprus rewarded his new employers with stellar play in goal. In a closely fought season, it was APOEL's head to head performance against co-tenants Omonoia that proved the difference, and when it all ended, APOEL stood alone at the top, winning their 20th title. Ivan Jovanovic was there last time they won the league as manager, and will remain for next year. Next year starts soon as APOEL are already just 2 round wins shy of repeating Anorthosis's feat last year
