  1. We had another mass shooting in the US, this time in Las Vegas, the deadliest of its kind, until the next one of course. Our right to be safe is trampled by the right for someone to own military-grade weapons. We had hoped that after the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre, Congress would act to pass some federal gun safety laws. Nothing! The victims' stories and pictures in Vegas are beginning to circulate now. I'll leave you with the images of the children of Sandy Hook as a horrific reminder that how a political party and its leaders are essentially in the pocket of the gun lobby.
  2. AEK in Greek Cup 2017-18

Respectfully disagree about Ouzounidis "should have done much better in the 1st half of the season...." You could say this under normal circumstances, but not under the ones after Alafouzo announced his decision to pull back early in the first half. The competitive teams work off season to prepare and rely on a stable core of players. PAO and Marinos didn't have that. If you're a player owed money, you hear that the club may even fall to 3rd div. when big players are sold, or leave or about to leave, well, excuse me, but it's understandable why you don't give 100%. Even back then, Marinos didn't have a stable unit. It's not like PAO had a deep bench. You start with Berg and Zeca, etc, and then?.... Much of high-competitive game is mental. The other half is internal culture and quality of people. The ..third half is the outside circumstances.... All negative.

    Don't forget the military parade!
  4. AEK in Greek Cup 2017-18

Agreed. I'm a PAO fan too, but it's nice to see AEK competing at this high level. If we had Ouzounidis when Alafouzos hired Strapacho(ni), we would be kings.
  5. Macedonia Name Dispute

I don't think Skopje will settle without "Macedonia" in the name. From the European and US perspective Skopje has taken positive steps for a resolution and Greece appears unreasonable. The name "Macedonia" has been almost universally accepted for many years now. It doesn't mean Greece has to agree to it, or to the new Skopje concessions, but if Greece is left alone on this, the case will be lost... or, until there will be a re-drawing of borders and different countries. An acceptable (meaning: practical) solution could be "Slavic Macedonia" ? This is descriptive of ethnicity + geography. Geographically Macedonia is in multiple countries, so by attaching a ethnic description to the name may be the solution. This acknowledges that Skopje is Slavic, not Greek. I'm saying all this without the knowledge in current backroom negotiations and interests at play. It could be that if Skopje must enter NATO and the EU, it may compromise further. But, what I know is that Skopje is known as Macedonia in the world right now. The longer it stays so, the stronger the meme.
  6. It's been customary that the best student of a school gets to carry the national flag during a parade his/her school participates in. As you may know, yesterday on 28th of October, it was a national holiday with parades throughout the country. I've heard that in 2 of them, the best students were denied this honor because they were not ethnically Greek. One of those students is from Afghanistan and the other is ethnically Albanian. The boy was allowed to march without the flag, but the girl in Santorini wasn't because a dozen fascists intervened before the parade started resulting in the cancellation of the parade after parents took their kids home fearing violence. This is not the first time such things have happened in Greece. What do you think? Personally, I feel it's a disgrace to deny any student any honor, or discriminate them, based on factors like race, gender, ethnicity, religion.

  8. Trump Presidency

Yes, she was very unpopular and, as it seems, she didn't excite her base to come out and vote. But, these two represented two different worlds. She was qualified to be president. And, she would appoint competent people in vital positions. And, probably she'd be raising her own taxes instead. I think many voters don't really think about the greater implications of voting for a president. Probably they voted against HRC without thinking about the Supreme Court, the environment, science, education, health care, foreign relations, etc, etc. I'd like to think that most of us would call out a bullshitter like Trump no matter what party he belonged to. It was so obvious that he was either lying or didn't know what he was talking about. So obvious. It's like you walk into a room to talk about something you know nothing about.... you'd say generalities and bullshit that would make people happy. Hey, if you elect me to run Phantis I'll give everyone free internet access, money for every post, and a new car every month to the person whose posts are liked the most. Trust me, I'm very successful, and I can make Phantis great again. Just give me the keys!
  9. Daily Team News [ 2017 ]

We drew at home against Panetoliko, 0-0. Kourbelis got injured and will be out about a month. I just hope Marinos has time to beef up this team before we play the top 3 teams, 'cause I don't want to see a disaster.
  10. Trump Presidency

Republicans are morally corrupt, no matter how you slice it. But many Americans like that secretary voted for Trump, because, heck, he'll build a wall, bring back jobs, drain the pool, stand during the national anthem, and generally make America great again! I can't fathom how so many people have been duped by Trump. His lies are so obvious and he's bullshitting all his life.
  11. Another Mass Shooting in the US

@BostonThanatos this is the case of using data to mislead. Yeah, cities have more people too. The concentration of big numbers have certain effects, like more car accidents, etc. Crime, too, will happen when there are more people congregating. But, those who believe (with no good reason) that having tons of guns available for ..anyone isn't a factor in gun violence will never accept facts! Also, the map above shows a correlation not causation. [too hard of a concept for some to comprehend; much like the difference between the median and average] Cities indeed have Democratic administrations in the US [cities tend to be Democrat, urban areas Republican, and suburbs mixed]; they also have strict gun laws. But guns filter in from surrounding areas or states with loose gun laws. Here's a study that attempts to examine the relationship between local crime and supply (origin) of guns. In NYC, for example, most of the guns used in crime come from Virginia and other states. "firearms have a knack for flooding into states with tough gun laws from those without. (To cite just one example: Sixty percent of guns used to commit crimes in Chicago between 2009 and 2013 originated outside of Illinois.) A state's gun laws, it seems, can be undermined by those of its neighbors." When will the gun owners realize that they're being played by the NRA? The gun lobby is a front for the gun manufacturers to sell more weapons. The high price of gun violence is being paid by everyone, including lawful gun owners. And, here's a thoughtful article about gun violence in the US.
  12. I think Oly has a better team. On paper it costs twice as much as PAO, but in the games between these 2 rivals anything is possible. The greens aren't competitive for the title, and the reds are struggling this year. I hope we see a good match and the home team wins. I'm not sure the majority of players for both teams truly know what this "derby" means... lots of new faces, and not many players stay put for several years to really identify with a team. Above all, I hope nothing bad happens in terms of violence.
  13. PAO - OSFP League Game Oct 28, 2017

Even though Oly came back late in the second half (first shot on goal 79'), PAO deserved to win this one as it was clearly the better team on the field today! Amazing. And if the greens had the 2 points deducted from last year, they'd be above gavroi today. I hope the people with money see that this club is worth saving and making it powerful again.
  14. PAO - OSFP League Game Oct 28, 2017

For a derby, this is a good game in my opinion. PAO is playing very well and Lucas just scored! 1-0. The greens deserving to win, so far, based on their game. Gavroi haven't had 1 good chance yet.
  15. Catalan Independance

I think both sides are led by knuckleheads who are leading Spain into serious conflict. The way they speak and their actions are not wise if indeed they want to reach some kind of resolution to this serious issue. The Catalans feel that their separate identity warrants more control over their own affairs, and I understand that, but establishing a new country by cutting of a big chunk of another is very difficult. The Madrid government should also realize that it can't keep Catalonia by force alone. What, is the Spanish government going to occupy and brutally suppress such a large area and millions of people? Greater autonomy is the solution for Catalonia in my opinion. Also, Catalonia has many benefits by being in Spain and the EU. By the way, as anyone who knows about state formation would tell you, people are patriotic and feel proud citizens of a country because they receive benefits for giving their allegiance to the state. It could be cultural, political, identity, economic, whatever, but if people don't feel emotionally tied to a country, there's a big problem... Being occupied of feel oppressed doesn't make you want to be part of what you hate.
  16. Another Mass Shooting in the US

^^^^ Ah, OK, it's about Hillary now. I never would have guessed..... Oh, and the fake news parade shows up on cue to muddle the issue further. The claim about increased burglaries is fake, drawn from a pro-gun nut's unsubstantiated claims*. But even if it were true, having no massacres since the gun ban, and the reduction of people dying from firearms is a significant progress. " The conclusions drawn in this piece were both premature and inaccurate, however. In a peer-reviewed paper published by American Law and Economics Review in 2012, researchers Andrew Leigh of Australian National University and Christine Neill of Wilfrid Laurier University found that in the decade following the NFA, firearm homicides (both suicides and intentional killings) in Australia had dropped significantly." And, "Similarly, Dr. David Hemenway and Mary Vriniotis of the Harvard Injury Control Research Center found in 2011 that the NFA had been “incredibly successful in terms of lives saved”.... the more guns I have the more free I am? * All sorts of crime has peaks and valleys. I can find any short period where I can find data to argue just about anything. Burglaries went up in Australia for a couple years after the gun ban but no direct correlation can be established. If seen over a long time, say from the gun ban till today, burglaries are significantly down. Again, mass shootings: zero. It doesn't mean there won't be any ever, but what we see in the US is crazy and ever more crazy that very little to address the scourge has been done.
  17. Another Mass Shooting in the US

People have been saying that if nothing happened after Sandy Hook (where 20 young schoolchildren were killed), nothing will happen after the Vegas shooting. Today, I read an article in The Atlantic by D. Frum (conservative, former GW Bush speech writer), who said actually gun laws ..loosen after a massacre. Of course, gun sales go up too. "This may explain why gun advocates insist that the immediate aftermath of a spectacular massacre is “too soon” for the gun discussion. They want the pain and grief and fear to ebb. They want ordinary citizens to look away. Then, when things are quiet, the gun advocates will go to work, to bring more guns to places where alcohol is served, where children are cared for, where students are taught, where God is worshipped. More killings bring more guns. More guns do more killing. "
  18. Daily Team News [ 2017 ]

well, players long gone are still owed lots of money and they're threatening to sue, which means the team will be punished with -3 points per game, and after 3 offenses, it automatically drops a division. Tavlarides is owed $30K immediately and there are many others, like Toche, Essien (remember Alafouzos spending close to a million on this a-hole?), et al.
  19. Trump Presidency

When I hear, "give the guy a chance", I say, why give a chance to a buffoon, a charlatan, a bullsh*t and con artist?..... On these grounds alone, it's idiotic to argue for giving the car keys to a toddler! But, let's say the debate was within the margins of a political disagreement (this is not, because of the man-child in the driver's seat)... why would I give him a chance? I will not forget how badly he and so many others treated former President Barack Obama for 8 years... challenging O's legitimacy (birthism) I will not "work together" to privatize Medicare, cut Social Security and Medicaid. I will not "work together" to build a wall. I will not "work together" to persecute Muslims, put them on a national registry I will not "work together" to lower taxes on the 1% and increase taxes on the middle class and poor. I will not "work together" to help Trump use the Presidency to use the office for nepotism and for promoting Trump business I will not "work together" to weaken and demolish environmental protection. I will not "work together" to sell American lands, especially National Parks, to companies which then despoil those lands. I will not "work together" to remove civil rights from anyone. I will not "work together" to slash funding for education, the arts, humanities, and public broadcasting. I will not "work together" to take basic assistance from people who are at the bottom of the socioeconomic ladder. I will not "work together" to get rid of common sense regulations on guns. I will not "work together" to eliminate the minimum wage. I will not "work together" to suppress scientific research, be it on climate change or anything else where there's a scientific consensus I will not "work together" to criminalize abortion or restrict health care for women, and defund Planned Parenthood. I will not "work together" to increase the number of nations that have nuclear weapons. I will not "work together" to put even more "big money" into politics. I will not "work together" to violate the Geneva Conventions. I will not "work together" to give the Ku Klux Klan, the Nazi Party, the Alt-Right and white supremacists a seat at the table, or to normalize their hatred. I will not "work together" to increase voter suppression. I will not "work together" to normalize autocratic rule, and to disrespect for our democratic institutions, while expressing admiration for dictators. I will not work together to undermine consumer protection and the safety of products I do not want to see the Supreme Court and federal judiciary populated by Trump judges that think corporations are people and "original intent" (of slave owners) should supersede common sense in the 21st c. Obviously these positions are progressive and conservatives are for all the above, hence my disagreement. But, with Trump, we're talking about the most unqualified person to occupy the White House in the last 100 years (possibly ever). He's been a fraud all his life. The only interesting thing left (for me) is to see at which point, if ever, the Repubs will figure out they've been duped.
  20. Trump Presidency

The conservatives claim to be faithful, especially those pious Xtians who miss no opportunity to tell us how morally superior they are. In reality, they and their party are morally corrupt when it comes to public policy meant to help the sick, the powerless, and the poor. The Good Samaritan story? Who's that socialist person who redistributes resources, advocates something unsustainable, and reinforces bad behavior?... Here's today's NYT Op-Ed: Editorials, Op-Ed and Letters | OP-ED COLUMNIST And Jesus Said Unto Paul of Ryan ... By NICHOLAS KRISTOF What would Jesus tell House Speaker Paul Ryan about looking after the sick and the needy? A woman who had been bleeding for 12 years came up behind Jesus and touched his clothes in hope of a cure. Jesus turned to her and said: “Fear not. Because of your faith, you are now healed.” Then spoke Pious Paul of Ryan: “But teacher, is that wise? When you cure her, she learns dependency. Then the poor won’t take care of themselves, knowing that you’ll always bail them out! You must teach them personal responsibility!” They were interrupted by 10 lepers who stood at a distance and shouted, “Jesus, have pity on us.” “NO!” shouted Pious Paul. “Jesus! You don’t have time. We have a cocktail party fund-raiser in the temple. And don’t worry about them — they’ve already got health care access.” Jesus turned to Pious Paul, puzzled. “Why, they can pray for a cure,” Pious Paul explained. “I call that universal health care access.” Jesus turned to the 10 lepers. “Rise and go,” he told them. “Your faith has made you well.” Then he turned back to Pious Paul, saying, “Let me tell you the story of the good Samaritan. “A man was attacked by robbers who stripped him of clothes, beat him and left him half dead. A minister passed down this same road, and when he saw the injured man, he crossed to the other side and hurried on. So did a rich man who claimed to serve God. But then a despised Samaritan came by and took pity on the injured man. He bandaged his wounds and put the man on his own donkey and paid an innkeeper to nurse him to health. So which of these three should we follow?” “Those who had mercy on him,” Pious Paul said promptly. Jesus nodded. “So go ——” “I mean the first two,” Pious Paul interjected. “For the Samaritan’s work is unsustainable and sends the wrong message. It teaches travelers to take dangerous roads, knowing that others will rescue them from self-destructive behaviors. This Samaritan also seems to think it right to redistribute money from those who are successful and give it to losers. That’s socialism! Meanwhile, if the rich man keeps his money, he can invest it and create jobs. So it’s an act of mercy for the rich man to hurry on and ignore the robbery victim.” “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of Heaven,” Jesus mused to himself. “It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter heaven.” “Let me teach you about love, Jesus — tough love!” Pious Paul explained. “You need a sustainable pro-business model. And you need to give people freedom, Jesus, the freedom to suffer misery and poverty.” “The Lord God has anointed me to bring good news to the poor,” Jesus replied, emphasizing the last two words. Then he turned to a paralyzed beggar at his feet. “Stand up!” Jesus told the man. “Pick up your mat and go home.” As the man danced about joyfully, Pious Paul rolled his eyes dismissively. “Look, Jesus, you have rare talent, and it should be rewarded,” Pious Paul said. “I have a partner, The Donald, who would like to work with you: He’d set up a lovely hospital, and the rich would come and pay for you to heal them. You’d get a percentage, and it’d be a real money-spinner. Overhead would be minimal because every morning you could multiply some loaves and fishes. You could strike it rich!” “Blessed are the poor, for theirs is the kingdom of God,” Jesus said. “But woe to you who are rich, for you have already received comfort.” “Oh, come on, Jesus,” Pious Paul protested. “Don’t go socialist on me again. Please don’t encourage class warfare. The best way to help the needy is to give public money to the rich. That then inspires the poor to work harder, galvanizes the sick to become healthy, forces the lepers to solve their own problems rather than kick back and depend on others. That’s why any realistic health plan has to focus on providing less coverage for the poor, and big tax benefits for the rich. When millions of people lose health care, that’s when a country is great again!” “From everyone who has been given much,” Jesus told him, “much will be required.” “Well, sure, this hospital would have a foundation to do some charity work. Maybe commissioning portraits of The Donald to hang in the entrance. But let’s drop this bleeding heart nonsense about health care as a human right, and see it as a financial opportunity to reward investors. In this partnership, 62 percent of the benefits would go to the top 0.6 percent — perfect for a health care plan.” Jesus turned to Pious Paul on his left and said: “Be gone! For I was hungry and you gave me no food; I was thirsty, and you gave me no drink; and I was sick, and you did not help me.” “But, Lord,” protested Pious Paul of Ryan, “when did I see you hungry or thirsty or sick and refuse to help you? I drop your name everywhere. And I’m pro-life!”
  21. Trump Presidency

Also, the "wiretapping" Trump said "sick" Obama ordered on him.... So, here are the possibilities: Obama ordered an illegal surveillance Some agency did this illegally There was a legal investigation (with warrant and proper procedure) about something, like Russian hacking. Trump is a liar. Given DJT's history, which one do you thing is most probable?... By the way, he's the president now, so he can find out whether this took place, or that million of illegals voted, or the kind of "carnage" he inherited, or the unemployment figure, or the FBI, CIA, NSA findings on Russian interference, etc, etc. As we knew during the campaign, Trump is a man-child, ill-tempered for the office, a buffoon and an ignoramus, and a narcissistic pathological liar. Sadly, this is not my "liberal" opinion, it's the facts. Politifact
  22. Trump Presidency

So, what happened to, "I have a plan that will cost less and will insure everyone"? Now, "nobody knew health care was so complicated!"... Is that possible that Trump didn't have a plan for health care? Now he's relying on Speaker Ryan to promote something that will conservatives don't like and the CBO says it'll make 24 mil. lose health coverage. Are we great yet?
  23. Xanthi-Pao 02/25/2017 19:30

    Xanthi scored... aw well....
  24. Xanthi-Pao 02/25/2017 19:30

PAO has had a very hard time at Xanthi but this time it's different. OK, it's tied 0-0 at the half, but PAO has had chances to score and 70% possession. I watched segments of this game (while working on other stuff) and I have to say this PAO team is transformed to a much better team than in the recent past. You can see they want to win this one, and they've been playing well lately. For me the league title is gone, but if PAO can win the cup and make to Europa would be a success this season under the circumstances. The budget will be slashed too for the foreseeable future.
  25. Black Lives Matter Movement

You both say reasonable things which should be the basis for meaningful reforms. Instead we have people on both sides who find the worst behaviors and abusers to support their views. In my view, this approach is not at all helpful. Those who generalize too much or wilfully want to create false impresssions perfrom a disservice and if they post here (which they do) demean this forum. (that;s my 3-cent contribution)
